Mateo Patrick Tiemersma
About
Hello, my name is Mateo, I'm a London-based singer-songwriter originally from Patagonia, Argentina, with a deep passion for guitar and songwriting. My music blends alternative folk with introspective storytelling, inspired by artists such as Ben Howard and Adrienne Lenker. I’m really invested in helping musicians find their voice on guitar and through songwriting. Over the years, I’ve honed my craft through live performances, recording projects, and teaching.
I attended Berklee College of Music’s Five-Week Summer Program in 2017, where I earned exclusively A’s and B’s in songwriting, performance, and musicianship
I've been doing acoustic live stream shows on Twitch.tv for the past 6 years, accumulating more than 30,000 followers and becoming a Twitch Partner in 2021. Through live-streaming on Twitch, I’ve interacted with thousands of musicians, answering questions, offering guidance, and fostering a supportive community of music lovers.
I have since performed at renowned venues in London such as The Troubadour, Oslo Hackney, The Green Note, and Strongroom. My original music has been featured on Indie Folk Central’s ‘Best Indie Folk of 2020’, and I’ve received grants from Help Musicians UK to support my latest recording projects.
I was selected by Help Musicians to attend Chris Difford's renowned songwriting retreat at Pennard House in Somerset. I had the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded artists, refining my songwriting craft in an environment celebrated for nurturing both established and emerging talent.
Teaching Style
My approach is student-centered, I like first having a conversation with the student to know what their aspirations are and in what area they want to improve. I then tailor lessons to fit their goals. Over the past few years, I have taught students of various levels, from absolute beginners to intermediate musicians looking to refine their craft. I have helped students build confidence, develop strong musical instincts, and create original music.
As an active performer and songwriter, I bring real-world experience to my lessons, helping students not just understand music theory but also apply it in a way that feels authentic to them. Whether you’re looking to write your first song, improve your fingerpicking, learn chords or develop a deeper understanding of musical storytelling, I’d love to help you on your journey!
Curriculum
For Guitar teaching:
Once we've covered the basics—like forming notes and chords, proper hand positioning, and reading chord grids or simple tablature—we quickly move on to playing songs and styles that inspire you. This way, you start applying your newfound skills right away, making practice both fun and rewarding.
Since every student is unique, I tailor the lesson materials to fit your tastes and progress. I'll create custom tablatures, chord charts, and exercises just for you, so over time you build a personalized "lesson book" that evolves with your musical journey.
For songwriting:
I take a non-traditional approach to teaching songwriting. Instead of focusing on writing hit songs or conforming to a specific formula, my aim is to help students discover and express their unique artistic voice. I guide you through a structured, process-driven journey where authenticity is the cornerstone of every song you create. In this mentorship-based model, we work collaboratively—from exploring initial ideas to refining your creative process—ensuring that your music remains true to who you are as an artist.
