About

I am a Montreal-based professional jazz guitar player. I have studied privately with Peter Bernstein, Pasquale Grasso, Greg Ruggiero, Ari Roland, Michael Weiss, Grant Stewart, Chris Byars and Alex Goodman. I am both a graduate of TJI (Tribeca Jazz Institute in NYC, 2025) and a graduate of McGill University (2019).

Short bio: Mathieu Soucy (he/him), “a natural-born swinger” (Jack Bowers, All About Jazz), “has been making quite a splash on the scene these days as a player, educator and composer with a nicely balanced style that has one foot planted firmly in the tradition and one foot planted firmly in the now” (Lyle Robinson, Jazz Guitar Life). His first full-length album RECOLLECTING (Inner-Bop Records) features brilliant voices of the new generation of Canadian jazz. 3x JUNO-winner Caity Gyorgy makes a guest appearance on two tracks as a vocalist and lyricist.

Teaching Style

I'll help you build a strong practice routine. This is the most important thing! We will talk about listening, transcription, repertoire, vocabulary, phrasing, articulation, harmony and technique. I consign lesson notes and comments in an online document so you can go back and look at them at any time. I currently have 3 spots left. Priority given to regular students (every week or other week), but open to answer ephemeral requests if schedule allows.

Curriculum

Barry Harris, Barry Harris, Barry Harris! You'll learn to speak the jazz idiom in no time. It's not so much about theory, but more so about learning a language as a language; i.e. by hearing and repeating. My students have unlocked their potential in only a few lessons.
