Matt Gagnon
About
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, and raised in Boston, MA, Matt Gagnon's musical journey began with the Suzuki method in his childhood, emphasizing ear training. He then advanced through rigorous preparatory programs at Groton Hill Music Center (formerly Indian Hill Music), Longy School of Music, and New England Conservatory, where he immersed himself in music theory and participated in various chamber, choral, and orchestral ensembles. As part of these studies, he participated in the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) method and exams.
In high school, Matt discovered his passion for pop music, joining a band and producing music for various pop projects. He also created original soundtracks and scores for theater pieces, receiving awards at local, state, and national levels. His college years saw him pivoting to industry studies, along with a passion project of music directing an a cappella group to a second-place win at the International Competition of Collegiate A Cappella in New York City. With a degree in music business from the University of Miami Frost School of Music and experience at Warner Music Group, Matt has developed a unique perspective and approach to developing well-rounded musicians who understand the current music business and can successfully market themselves.
Teaching has always been at the heart of Matt's career. He started with cello and piano lessons for neighbors, moving to teaching larger groups and ensembles, and eventually joined the Laura Jean Music Academy in Los Angeles, where he developed an artist development program for students in pop and commercial music songwriting and production. He draws inspiration from a long list of great educators he has been fortunate to study under, as well as various industry experts that he has surrounded himself with during his years in the business. His approach emphasizes positivity, the freedom to take risks, and tailoring his methods to each student's unique needs.
Teaching Style
Matt's core values include listening to his students, emphasizing foundational skills over impressive performances, and recognizing that commitment outside lessons leads to consistent results. He prioritizes his students' mental and physical health and ensures they have comfortable yet challenging repertoire. He also believes in the importance of thoroughly understanding his students' (and their parents') goals to tailor each learning experience effectively.
Matt has been constantly challenging himself with technology and remote teaching, experimenting to develop a system that works just as well for online lessons as it does for in-person lessons. As an active music producer and engineer, he continually pursues his music career, which enhances his teaching by keeping him attuned to the ever-changing musical landscape.
