Megan Lyons
About
Hello! My name is Megan Lyons, and I’m passionate about helping students of all ages discover the joy of learning Spanish. Over the past decade, I’ve taught Spanish in a wide range of settings, from high schools and universities in Buffalo, NY, to language institutes in Costa Rica, to online classrooms connecting with learners around the world.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish with a minor in Linguistics from the University at Buffalo, where I also pursued graduate studies and worked as a Spanish Adjunct Instructor. My international experience includes teaching Business English in San José, Costa Rica, and completing a scholarship program in Barcelona, Spain. These experiences have given me a deep appreciation for language as both a practical tool and a bridge between cultures.
My teaching style is interactive, supportive, and flexible. I like to blend traditional methods with creative techniques: using visuals, games, music, and conversation to make lessons engaging and memorable. I believe language learning should feel approachable and rewarding, so I design my classes in modules that build confidence step by step – whether you are a total beginner, preparing for travel, or looking to strengthen your fluency.
In addition to teaching Spanish, I’ve worked with students learning English as a foreign language (EAL) through platforms like VIPKid, where I earned TESOL certifications and specialized in making online learning dynamic and fun. I understand the challenges of learning a new language, and I always adapt my lessons to meet the goals, needs, and learning styles of my students.
When I’m not teaching, I enjoy painting, playing guitar and piano, practicing yoga, exploring new foods, and spending time outdoors hiking and camping. I love bringing my creativity and enthusiasm into the classroom to create a positive and motivating learning environment.
If you’re looking for personalized Spanish lessons in small groups or one-on-one sessions, I’d love to work with you! Together, we’ll build practical skills, cultural insights, and the confidence to use Spanish in real life.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is immersive and interactive! I use Spanish as much as possible in class, supported by visuals, real-world objects, music, and articles to make the language come alive. I like to keep lessons light and fun with humor and memorable moments, while weaving in cultural connections, pop culture, and current events. With my background in linguistics, I explain grammar in a clear, approachable way and encourage students to appreciate the diversity of Spanish dialects, embracing a descriptive rather than prescriptive view of the language.
Curriculum
My lessons are built around dynamic PowerPoints that go beyond text on a slide! Expect lots of visuals, animations, gifs, and movement to keep learning engaging and interactive. I incorporate music, articles, real-world objects, and cultural references so Spanish feels alive and relevant.
I do not require students to purchase a textbook. Instead, I provide materials as we move along, tailoring them to each class and student’s needs. This flexible approach allows us to focus on communication, culture, and grammar in ways that are memorable and practical.
