Nikolas Snyder
About
Nikolas Snyder (aka BANJO THUNDER) is an indie folk singer-songwriter from San Diego, CA. He has a unique approach to the banjo and guitar. His captivating lyrics are reminiscent of early Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, and The Tallest Man on Earth. He spent years playing professionally in New Orleans, which influenced his music and perspective. He lead his own band Swamp Kitchen which combined many New Orleans legends playing original music with young up and coming musicians. He now lives in the Dominican Republic, teaching music. He has performed with many world-class musicians, including Davell Crawford and Wendell Brunious at such prestigious festivals such as Jazz Ascona, Jazz a Viene, New Orleans Jazz Fest, French Quarter Fest and many more.
Teaching Style
My primary instrument is the plectrum banjo, a four-string banjo most commonly associated with early New Orleans traditional jazz. It features a long 22-fret neck and is tuned CGBD. While it differs from the tenor banjo in tuning and range, it is played in a very similar style, allowing for both rhythmic drive and melodic flexibility. I also play guitar and am well versed in jazz chords as well as music theory.
When I teach, I go to great lengths to tailor lessons to each student’s individual interests and playing ability. I help students choose songs that will challenge them and introduce new techniques, but never to the point of frustration or discouragement. I believe one of the most important aspects of learning a new instrument is working on music you genuinely love to listen to. That connection builds motivation and excitement about practicing—both of which are essential for real progress.
