Olivia L Satterfield
About
Hello my name is Olivia! I have been in music for a little over 5 years and have been teaching for 2 years. I have played professionally as a church musician in addition to studying for a summer at Berklee College of Music and being in various band / music projects. I have worked with students between the ages of 10 and 70, and I believe that it is never to late (or early) get a start in music. My favorite thing about teaching is seeing students have a light bulb moment and seeing them grow to enjoy their instrument more and more.
Teaching Style
I believe that the best way to learn to play is by learning songs. Students will first learn foundational techniques, then apply their skills through learning songs. Because most students wish to learn contemporary techniques, I usually teach with tablature sheet music and chord charts.
Curriculum
The app or website that I recommend to all of my students is Ultimate Guitar. This is because they have community generated tablature and chord charts of over 1 million songs. For those interested in learning standard notation, I recommend the Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method series. For those interested in Jazz, I recommend The Real Book, which is a collection of some of the most popular jazz standards. For those particularly interested in music theory, I recommend Music Theory for Dummies. For those who want to learn more in depth about music theory, I recommend the Berklee Contemporary Music theory book.
