About

Hello! My name is Ömer Kurtuluş, and I am an experienced piano and music theory instructor with over 11 years of teaching experience. I hold a background in teaching at prestigious institutions such as Istanbul State Conservatory, where I worked with students from the age of 5 to adults. Currently, I’m also serving as a Teacher Assistant at Bowling Green State University. My teaching philosophy centers around fostering a deep understanding and appreciation for music in my students, while tailoring lessons to meet each individual's unique needs and goals.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is flexible and student-centered, focusing on the unique needs and goals of each individual. For example, in piano lessons, I incorporate a variety of approaches to keep students engaged.

For beginners, I might start with simple pieces like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star” to build confidence and introduce basic note reading. We would then gradually progress to more complex pieces, incorporating sight-reading exercises and hand coordination drills.

For intermediate students, I introduce pieces like Beethoven’s “Für Elise” or Mozart’s “Minuet in G,” focusing on developing technical skills such as finger strength, articulation, and expression. Alongside this, I emphasize music theory, helping students understand the structure and harmony of the pieces they are playing.

For advanced students, we might work on challenging compositions like Chopin’s “Nocturnes” or Debussy’s “Clair de Lune,” delving into nuances of interpretation, advanced techniques like pedaling, and the emotional depth required to perform such pieces effectively. We also explore improvisation and composition, allowing students to express their creativity.

Each lesson is tailored to ensure that students not only improve their technical abilities but also develop a deep, personal connection to the music they play. My goal is to make learning piano both fun and fulfilling, fostering a lifelong passion for music.

Curriculum

My teaching method is holistic and progressive, focusing on building a strong foundation in both technique and musicality. I believe in a well-rounded approach that integrates sight-reading, ear training, music theory, and performance practice. Lessons are tailored to the student’s age, skill level, and personal goals, ensuring a balanced and engaging learning experience.

For beginners, I emphasize the importance of developing proper hand position and posture, as well as understanding basic musical concepts. We start with simple exercises and pieces to build confidence and gradually introduce more complex material as the student progresses.

For intermediate students, I focus on refining technique, expanding repertoire, and deepening their understanding of music theory. I encourage students to explore different musical styles and genres, helping them find their unique voice as a pianist.

Advanced students work on mastering challenging repertoire, with an emphasis on expression, interpretation, and performance. We delve into more complex theoretical concepts and encourage creativity through composition and improvisation.
