About

Paolo is a guitarist and music educator based in North London with over 20 years of experience playing guitar and more than 10 years of teaching. His musical journey began as a self-taught electric guitarist, exploring different styles and developing his ear and technique independently from an early stage.

Motivated by a strong curiosity for music and a desire to deepen his knowledge, he later moved to Bologna to pursue formal music education at Music Academy 2000, where he graduated first with a Higher Professional Diploma in July 2009 and after the bachelor degree in Contemporary Music in July 2012 with main instruments obviously the guitar and top marks in both of them. During this period, he studied with some of the most active session musicians in the Italian music industry. This experience allowed him to expand his musical vocabulary significantly, learning advanced guitar techniques, composition, orchestration, and arrangement for larger ensembles such as orchestra. He also developed skills in analysing different musical genres and understanding how music works across styles.

While studying, between the 2008 and 2013, Paolo became actively involved in the local music scene playing in famous venues like Transylvania and Lowhenof, working as both a teacher for private music associations like Assiocazione Zeno and as a session musician. He performed with several function bands and gained valuable professional experience playing in different musical contexts, one of the most famous was a context at the Giostrà in Bologna. At the same time, he composed orchestral music for major events organised by Happy Hour and Banca Mediolanum in the city of Carpi, precisely at the Teatro comunuale di Carpi, where his Ottetto strings arrangement were played for the first time.

After completing his studies, he moved i Sardinia in 2014, and continued developing his teaching career. He has worked as a specialist music tutor in public primary, secondary, and high schools, like Istittuto Comprensivo Loiri/PortoSanPaolo or IPIA, teaching mainly music but focusing on main instruments like guitar, keyboards, drum and bass, alongside teaching private students as a self employed, till he moved out to UK in 2019.

Till today, Paolo moved once again to London teaches both in person and online, and his students join lessons from four different continents, creating a diverse and international learning environment.

Teaching Approach

Paolo’s teaching approach is focused on adapting lessons to each student’s goals, interests, and learning style. He believes that every student learns differently, and lessons are designed to be engaging, practical, and motivating.

Whether a student is a complete beginner or a more advanced player, lessons are structured to develop:

  • Solid technical foundations

  • Musical understanding and theory

  • Creativity and musical expression

  • Confidence on the instrument

Paolo combines practical playing with clear explanations of how music works. Students learn not only how to play songs but also how to understand rhythm, harmony, and structure, which helps them progress faster and become more independent musicians.

His lessons can include:

  • Electric and acoustic guitar technique

  • Modern guitar methods and stylistic development

  • Music theory applied directly to the instrument

  • Improvisation and fret board knowledge

  • Composition and songwriting

  • Preparation for performances or personal projects

Because of his experience across multiple genres, Paolo can guide students through styles such as metal, rock, blues, funk, country, pop, and finger style guitar.

A key part of his teaching philosophy is helping students enjoy the process of learning while steadily improving their skills and achieving their personal musical goals.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is centered on the idea that every student has different goals, musical tastes, and ways of learning. For this reason, I design each lesson individually, adapting the content and pace to suit the student rather than following a rigid method.

I focus on building a strong foundation while keeping lessons engaging and practical. Students learn techniques that are directly applied to real music, helping them see progress quickly and stay motivated. Whether someone is a complete beginner or an experienced player looking to refine their skills, I aim to create a clear and structured path for improvement.

A key part of my approach is balancing technique, musical understanding, and creativity. Alongside learning songs and developing guitar skills, students also gain a deeper understanding of how music works. This includes rhythm, harmony, fretboard knowledge, and musical structure, which helps them become more confident and independent musicians over time.

Lessons are often built around:

  • Developing solid guitar technique and control

  • Understanding the fretboard and musical concepts in a practical way

  • Learning songs and styles the student enjoys

  • Improving timing, phrasing, and musical expression

  • Improvisation and creativity

  • Composition and songwriting (for students interested in creating their own music)

Because I have experience across many genres — including rock, metal, blues, funk, pop, country, and finger style — I can help students explore different styles or specialize in the ones they enjoy most.

I also encourage students to set personal goals and work towards them step by step. Some students want to play their favorite songs, others want to improve their technique, perform, or understand music theory more deeply. My aim is to support each student in reaching those goals while making the learning process enjoyable and rewarding.

Having students online from four different continents has also helped me develop a flexible and effective teaching method that works both in person and remotely, ensuring that lessons remain clear, interactive, and productive.

Curriculum

My teaching method is based on combining practical playing, technique development, and musical understanding. I structure lessons so students not only learn how to play the guitar, but also understand the music behind it. This helps them progress faster and become more independent musicians.

Lessons are personalised depending on the student’s level, goals, and preferred styles. Some students want to play songs they love, while others want to improve technique, learn theory, or develop improvisation and composition skills. My role is to guide each student through a clear and motivating learning path.

A typical learning path in my lessons includes:

1. Foundations

  • Correct posture and technique

  • Timing and rhythm development

  • Basic chords, scales, and fretboard understanding

  • Playing simple songs early in the process

2. Development

  • Expanding chord vocabulary and rhythm styles

  • Improvisation and musical phrasing

  • Understanding harmony and music theory

  • Playing in different genres such as rock, blues, funk, pop, and metal

3. Advanced Skills

  • Lead guitar techniques and expressive playing

  • Composition and songwriting

  • Advanced harmony and arrangement concepts

  • Developing personal style and musical identity

I also integrate real music and creative exercises, so students can apply what they learn immediately rather than only practising technical drills.

Because I teach both in person and online to students across different continents, I use structured lesson plans, clear demonstrations, and targeted exercises that help students stay motivated and track their progress between lessons.

Recommended Books

Depending on the student’s level and interests, I often recommend the following books as supporting material:

Structured Professional Study

  • A Modern Method for Guitar – A more advanced and structured approach used in professional music education, focusing on melody, harmony, rhythm, and reading skills.

Fingerstyle Guitar

  • Hal Leonard Fingerstyle Guitar Method – A complete introduction to fingerstyle guitar using real songs and progressive exercises.

Music Learning & Mindset

  • Guitar Zero: The New Musician and the Science of Learning – A book exploring how people learn guitar and develop musical skills, useful for understanding the learning process itself.
