About

Raphaël Dargent is a French composer based in Los Angeles. His compositions include soundtracks for the Cannes selected feature The Legend (2018), 2020 Oscar eligible short film Two (2019), Prime Video thriller Silent as the Grave (2023), Apple TV film The Actor (2024) and the PBS documentary Why Dinosaurs? (2024).

In 2018, he graduated from the USC Screen Scoring master program for which he received the Harry Warren Scholarship. He was also admitted into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society

Teaching Style

This course is designed for composers looking to refine their skills across various aspects of the art of music for film. The goal is to explore a comprehensive range of solutions that will help elevate your compositions to the next level.

On the Technical/Technological Side:

  • We will discuss your recording/home studio setup, production techniques (using Logic, Cubase, Ableton, or Pro Tools), plugins, Kontakt sound libraries, mockup creation, custom template building, live recording, mixing, mastering, STEM export, and more.

On the Composition Side:

  • Topics will include the relationship with the image, tempo maps, beat mapping, use of meter, attention to sound design and dialogue, harmonic techniques, modes, orchestration, film music history, arranging, instrument usage, electronic music, synthesizers (hardware or VST), and modular synthesis.

Live Recording Sessions:

  • We’ll cover relationships with directors, demo presentations, MIDI clean-up for export to Sibelius or Finale, STEM export processes to Pro Tools for live recording, the composer’s role in a live recording session, conducting, hybrid mixing of live tracks with mockups, and more.

On the Business/Process Side:

  • The importance of networking, creating quotes, legal/tax issues, copyright, the film market, expansion advice, sales techniques, communication, IMDb credits, and website creation.
