Seamus Paul Cowan
About
I’m Séamus Óg, an Irish musician from Carrickfergus, specializing in guitar and bouzouki and a unique instrument I play called the Cittern. Shaped by the rich traditions of Irish music, storytelling, and island life, my musical journey is inspired by the sounds and stories of my homeland, yet I’m always eager to explore new musical landscapes.
Since making my debut with Best Masala Tea, I’ve been lucky to share the stage with some incredible artists and have gained support from BBC, RTÉ, Celtic FM, and Radio Fáilte. My latest releases, Terry's Síbín and Haul The Pots, are a continuation of my exploration of sound and storytelling, and I’m thrilled it’s been receiving such positive attention.
My music is about connection, to place, to history, and to the moments that shape us. I hope it inspires you to keep exploring you own musical path!
Teaching Style
My teaching style is rooted in patience, curiosity, and connection. As well as being able to have a laugh! I approach music as a shared language, one that’s meant to be felt as much as learned. Whether I’m working with beginners or more experienced players, I try to create a relaxed and encouraging environment where people feel safe to explore, make mistakes, and grow.
I tend to focus on listening deeply, playing by ear, however I do encourage theory alongside this. I love helping students find their unique voice through their instrument, and I tailor each session to their pace and interests
Curriculum
My teaching methods are rooted in a blend of traditional folk approaches and creative, student-led exploration. As common with Trad music, I teach by ear and repetition, especially when working with traditional tunes, helping students develop a strong sense of phrasing, rhythm, and feel before diving into notation or theory.
I incorporate:
-
Comping and melody playing
-
Improvisation exercises to encourage creativity and risk-taking
-
Slow practice techniques - cant encourage this enough, SLOW SLOW!
-
Chord theory - How can we play an Irish song with more feeling? What chords can we subsitute, to follow the melody a little closer.
