Serena Barringer

Hi, there! My name is Serena Barringer and I am a classically trained lyric soprano and pianist. I graduated summa cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a B.A. degree in Music, concentrating in voice. I have studied with several prestigious voice instructors, including soprano Christina Pier, voice professor at UNC-Charlotte & 2003 Grand Finals Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and coloratura soprano Ilana Lubitsch, voice professor at Davidson College & winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Central Regional Auditions. I trained in piano under Steinway Teacher Hall of Fame and world renown pianist Cynthia Lawing, piano professor at Davidson College, where I earned "excellent" and "superior" marks in piano competitions during my high school years. 

While I am trained in opera and classical music, I love to sing jazz, musical theatre, and pop. I also compose original music, which is my greatest passion alongside teaching! 

I offer a fun, positive learning environment where students feel comfortable to explore and develop their technical and artistic skills! Whether you're just beginning, have some experience, or are an advanced musician wanting to get to the next level, I can help you in your journey! I customize lessons to each student's learning style and personal goals so you can get what you want out of lessons. 

VOICE LESSONS

I help singers build skills such as secure breath support, vocal clarity & resonance, a strong mixed voice, healthy belting, reading sheet music, proper enunciation & tone, dynamic expression, and vocal flexibility & freedom. I use both physical techniques and visualization exercises in my teaching to emphasize natural instinct and make learning more accessible and enjoyable!

PIANO LESSONS

I help piano students build technical knowledge of and skill in playing all major & minor scales, arpeggios, & chords, basic & advanced music theory concepts, reading sheet music, proper form, and ability to play pieces with both hands in a variety of styles including classical, jazz, and pop! I apply multiple helpful strategies to make learning songs more fun and less overwhelming!
