Teaching Style

Objective: The primary goal of one-on-one music lessons is to foster a personalized and supportive learning environment that caters to the unique needs, goals, and interests of each student. By focusing on individual progress and nurturing a passion for music, students can develop both technical skills and a deeper appreciation for their instrument and music as a whole.

Personalized Curriculum: Each lesson is tailored to the student’s current skill level, musical preferences, and learning style. The curriculum is flexible, allowing for adjustments based on the student’s progress and interests. Lessons include a mix of technique, repertoire, music theory, and ear training to provide a well-rounded musical education.

Goal Setting: At the beginning of each lesson, time is dedicated to setting short-term and long-term goals. This helps keep students motivated and focused on their personal development. Goals are revisited regularly to celebrate achievements and identify new areas of focus.

Active Engagement: Lessons are designed to be interactive, encouraging students to actively participate in their learning process. This includes hands-on activities such as playing exercises, exploring new pieces, and experimenting with improvisation. Students are encouraged to ask questions and share their thoughts and ideas.

Feedback and Reflection: Constructive feedback is provided throughout the lesson to guide the student’s progress. Students are encouraged to self-reflect on their playing and identify areas for improvement. Positive reinforcement is used to build confidence and reinforce successful learning moments.

Technique Development: Focused time is spent on developing proper technique and posture to ensure a strong foundation for playing. Exercises are selected to address specific technical challenges, and progress is monitored to ensure continuous improvement.

Repertoire Exploration: Students are introduced to a diverse range of musical pieces that align with their interests and skill level. This helps broaden their musical horizons and keeps them engaged. Students have the opportunity to choose pieces they are passionate about, fostering a deeper connection to their instrument.

Creative Expression: Opportunities for creativity are woven into each lesson, whether through improvisation, composition, or interpretation of pieces. Students are encouraged to express themselves musically and explore their unique artistic voice.

Performance Opportunities: Regular performance opportunities are provided to help students build confidence and gain experience in sharing their music with others. This may include informal studio recitals or participation in local events and competitions.

Progress Monitoring: A system of regular assessments and progress tracking is used to ensure that students are meeting their goals and making steady improvements. This allows both the teacher and student to stay informed and motivated.

By focusing on these core principles, one-on-one music lessons create an enriching and supportive environment that empowers students to reach their full musical potential.

Curriculum

Music is a language and learning to speak music, as well as speaking music in genral, should be FUN! One of my favorite movies is Mr. Holland's Opus, and my favorite line in the film is delivered when he's teaching a young red headed teenage girl who had been struggling with her instrument. He asked her, "Is it any fun?" Refering to learning music. "Music should be fun!" I agree 100% I can't absolutely promise you that everything you may practice or perform in the future will always be fun, but it should be a majority of the time. My goal is to teach you music from a fun paradigm in an easy to understand method making complex material make sense.
