Simon Saville
About
Hi , my name is Simon and I've been teaching guitar for 20 years. I was highly influenced by a private music teacher I had when I was 16 who propelled me to complete an Associates degree in music in Australia. I moved to the states around 2007 and lived in the Philadelphia/NJ area up until 3 years ago when my wife and I moved to Washington state. Having a good teacher really elevated my playing, my appreciation and passion for music and it's my determination to do the same for you.
Teaching Style
I've taught group lessons in a public school, 7 summers at Appel farm arts and music camp in south Jersey, and 2 other private music schools in south Jersey (Music Training Center, Marlton, NJ and After School Music in Pitman NJ) as well as my own private lessons. I've played in a many teacher bands and 2 of my students are now in bands of their own. One of my favorite bands to be involved in is one where we only pay once a year at a pool party. The band members practice 20 songs separately and come together in July and go for it! There's a lot of trust involved. I've taught 3 of my students for more than 5 years and enjoyed watching them grow and improve over time. I've also participated in many recitals to highlight student performances. I also teach bass guitar and ukelele.
I like to keep lessons fun and informal. Although theory is important, I put an emphasis on practical playing so students can achieve their goals faster. I also like to sprinkle in some theory so students can make sense of why/what they are playing and become a more independent musician. Although I have a strong connection to 80"s/90's rock, I appreciate all forms/decades of music and also like to teach fingerstyle, folk, classical and pop.
Curriculum
I don't have specific method books I use although I have used the Hal Leonard series in the past for the basics of reading. I also like the students to choose songs themselves so they will be more inclined to play/practice and we can always simplify or complicate a song depending on what aspect of the music we are working on. Whether it's strumming patterns, rhythms, note reading, solos, etc.
