Spencer Adamson
About
Spencer is a piano and voice teacher from North Texas. He began his musical education at the age of 4 after begging his parents for piano lessons. Growing up with a classical music background, he began competing in State and local piano competitions from the ages of 12-16. After graduating high school, he attended the University of North Texas with a major in Classical Piano Performance.
Spencer has spent the last 16 years performing professionally in multiple bands both independently and with a record label. He lived in Chicago for 4 ½ years performing as a hired pianist and studio session artist playing in genres such as Blues, R&B, Folk, and Country. He has toured nationally with several artists and has performed overseas and currently performs locally and out-of-state with his current band, The Regular.
Spencer teaches both classical and contemporary music and works with beginner through advanced students providing them with a strong foundation in music theory, technique, and improvisation. With this approach, he aims to foster creativity and the ability to perform in multiple styles.
Teaching Style
For beginners, I typically take all students through the Faber & Faber Piano Adventures method book series. I've tried many methods and found this to be the most accessible and easy to understand for most students. During level 3 is where the world of piano starts to really "open up". With the foundation gained from the method books, we have a great jumping-off point to start learning more advanced topics, such as improvisation, and move into genres such as jazz, country, gospel, etc. The method books, while the main focus for beginners, are not the be-all-end-all. We will also explore songs that the student is interested in as well! By honing in on student interests, I've found student engagement to be much higher in the long run. Understanding student interests also helps me to structure the lesson plan.
My true goal with each student, is to give them the tools to be creative on their instrument.
