Spencer Perilloux
About
I am a classically trained percussionist with a Master of Music from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Music from Central Michigan University. My performance background includes regular appearances with the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra and the Michigan Sinfonietta Orchestra. I have also served as a mentor with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Youth Ensembles and performed as an invited participant at the Roundtop Music Festival in 2023.
My approach to education is rooted in clarity, depth, and responsiveness. I have taught students across all levels, from beginners to All-State auditionees, and developed materials specifically designed to close the confidence gap that many percussionists face. One of these is Unlock the Keyboard, a method to help students become fluent in mallet percussion through a structured and highly playable format.
As Jason Fettig, Director of Bands at the University of Michigan and former Director of “The President’s Own” Marine Band, wrote:
“Spencer Perilloux is a highly accomplished performer and pedagogue who has created an invaluable resource for secondary school percussionists.”
Teaching Style
My teaching emphasizes technical clarity and musical freedom. Every lesson focuses on helping students understand exactly what to do and why. This helps them build independence, solve problems efficiently, and perform with confidence. I support this approach with waveform analysis using Tonal Energy, annotated sheet music, and custom feedback videos when appropriate.
Whether you are a beginner, a returning adult player, or a serious student preparing for an audition, I structure each lesson to meet you where you are and keep you progressing with clear, achievable goals.
Curriculum
Depending on the student’s level and goals, I use a combination of traditional method books and custom resources, including:
-
Stick Control by George Stone
-
Modern School for Snare Drum by Morris Goldenberg
-
Fundamental Method for Mallets by Mitchell Peters
-
State audition etudes (ILMEA, MSBOA, FMEA, and others)
-
My original material, such as Unlock the Keyboard for mallet fluency, rhythm analysis exercises using waveform feedback, and audition-focused practice plans
Advanced students receive annotated PDF breakdowns and guided problem-solving strategies tailored to their repertoire.
