About
I’ve been studying guitar privately for over 30 years and have taught professionally for more than 20. My teaching covers a wide range of styles—including jazz, pop, rock and blues—with a strong foundation in improvisation, music theory, and ear training.
I hold a degree in Music Performance from Queensborough Community College, where I majored in guitar with a concentration in jazz improvisation, and I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Music at City College of New York. My formal studies have included extensive training in ear training/sight singing (I–IV), music theory (I–IV), performance, and juries, alongside private instruction in jazz improvisation.
My musical journey began early—my father is a professional musician and music educator in the United Kingdom, and thanks to his mentorship, I had performance opportunities from a young age. By 16, I was wearing a suit and tie playing rock, pop, and jazz at weddings with his function band and gaining valuable experience in musical theater pit work.
In addition to teaching full-time, I actively perform with several bands across New York, staying connected to the live music scene and bringing that real-world experience back into my lessons
Teaching Style
What My Guitar Tuition Offers
My teaching is centered around personalized, well-prepared, fun, and practical lessons that are tailored to each student's goals and learning style.
Each lesson is part of a thoughtful progression, with every class building on previously learned material to ensure continuity and a solid foundation.
I maintain detailed progress notes during each session, allowing for regular check-ins and adjustments based on the student’s development and needs.
Students often describe my teaching style as patient, attentive, and encouraging. While I emphasize technique and detail, I also prioritize helping each student connect with the joy and personal meaning of music.
Each year, students are invited to participate in the Spring Student Showcase, an online recital that offers a rewarding and motivating focus for year-end practice and reflection.
In addition to my formal music education, I bring a unique perspective to my teaching. Prior to studying at at Q.C.C and C.C.N.Y I lived in South Korea for 7 years where I studied as a meditation monk. This monastic period of my life gifted me with lots of diverse and valuable experiences, ranging from leading Buddhist/meditation classes for kids/teens/college to learning to converse in Korean at a high level.
Curriculum
My lessons are highly personalized and focus on balancing the student's needs and interests.
Credentials & Affiliations
I am a dedicated performer and teacher with a blend of academic training and professional experience. I studied Music Performance at Queensborough Community College from 2017 to 2019 and am currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at City College of New York. My background includes valuable recording experience at Rift Studios, where I performed in a jazz quintet under the guidance of Grammy-nominated producer Tom Gardner. Beyond my academic and studio work, I’ve also had the privilege of performing at distinguished venues, including a 2024 appearance at the Rainbow Room in New York City. I have always enjoyed teaching privately rather than in institutions, though during my time at Q.C.C. I also had the rewarding experience of working as a music tutor for college-level music theory students. As a teacher, I strive to create engaging, personalized lessons that help students build confidence, develop strong technique, and find joy in expressing themselves through music.
