I began classical piano lessons at a young age and I loved the idea of music. Some of my earliest memories are of exploring my parents’ CD collection, listening to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Earth, Wind & Fire on repeat. Not long after starting lessons, I wrote in my diary: “I just want to be really good at piano.”
This passion quickly grew, ultimately leading me to study other instruments (guitar and voice) and to pursue music professionally. I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a dual B.M. in Piano Performance and Music Production and Engineering, then received my M.F.A. in Music from UC Irvine, where I studied jazz piano with Kei Akagi and classical piano/Taubman technique with Nina Scolnik.
These days, I’m just as likely to be playing jazz as I am to be singing Ariana Grande or delving into the works of Chopin. I perform with my jazz trio and engage in various side projects, spanning genres from rock and blues to pop and bluegrass.
As a music teacher, I am dedicated to nurturing my students' love for music and helping them discover their unique musical voice. I strive to instill essential foundational skills like note reading, rhythm, and music theory, empowering them to play with both confidence and creativity.

My best friend and I began in-person guitar lessons with Summer at age 9 (both having had few years of exhaustive piano lessons with various other teachers); we are now leaving for college and still just as enthusiastic about seeing her, though over Facetime, as we were the first time we met. Summer has encouraged us not only to understand the fundamentals of music theory, but pushes us to make every piece our own and even endeavor to write our own songs. She has watched us grow in more ways than I can count, and I am eternally grateful to call her not just a terrific teacher, but a friend as well. And it must be said that she has put up with many hours of distracted giggling and bickering, and, for that, I commend her as well.
I can confidently say Summer is the best piano teacher I’ve had in my 13 years of taking lessons. She understands the importance of learning about music holistically, making sure I get practice with sheet music/reading, ear training, and music theory; and her kindness and patience make our lessons the highlight of my week. I have grown the most musically with her as my instructor and cannot recommend her enough!

Summer has a master's degree in music. She teaches piano, guitar and voice to students of various ages. I a senior piano student. Summer is very cheerful, patient and supportive. She guides me in selecting a variety of music choices and consistently offers encouragement. I am learning to play and music theory at my pace. She is an excellent music teacher.
Summer is not just a teacher, she is a friend. My best friend and I began lessons with Summer when we were 9 years old. We are both 18 now and the excitement of our weekly lessons have not dimmed in the slightest. Summer has instilled in us not only a deep love for the instrument, but also for the songs themselves - for music. We now listen, sing and play with an ear that is so unique to Summer's teaching style. My love and gratitude for Summer is immeasurable. <3
I have been taking guitar lessons with Summer for one year. My experience has been overwhelmingly positive. Summer is kind, patient, and never judgmental or critical. She is an incredible musician herself and has an impressive musical education. I had always wanted to play the guitar and am so happy I finally made the time for myself. So many people think they don’t have the time to learn, but even taking 15-30 minutes a day to practice will turn you into a guitar player in no time! Learning a new instrument has done wonders for my self-confidence - I never thought I’d be playing the guitar at a recital in front of 40 people! I would recommend Summer to anyone who is interested learning to play an instrument!

Summer is awesome! She tailors her classes specifically to each student’s individual needs. Summer has taught my oldest for 5 years. She is now also teaching my youngest. She sees that they have different learning styles and adapts her strategies accordingly. Always positive, encouraging, and dedicated, Summer makes learning piano interesting and fun. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to learn piano!
I have been working with Summer for a few months now and she has been making my music experience awesome! She is very flexible with learning styles. She creates a very positive and encouraging environment for music. I have nothing but great things to say about Summer and I would recommend Summer to anyone who is looking for direction in music.
After taking piano lessons from several different instructors, I finally found my Zen teacher! Summer is super talented, but she is also kind, patient and always encouraging. I’m an adult student and she is the perfect “musical guide”, giving me confidence and helping me tap into my own creativity. We work on music that I am interested in and using these songs she injects technique drills, listening/musicality exercises, introduces new skills, and gives practice tips. If you are looking for an instructor who holistically teaches music and musicality (not just scales and the correct hand position) then you are in the right place. I wish I could give her more than five stars!
I am an older student who had always wanted to study the piano but never found the time or, frankly, the courage. I stumbled across Summer's profile and thought it was time to give lessons a try. She has been absolutely tremendous in every way! She was patient with my initial anxieties about playing in front of others, was quick to offer supportive praise, and immediately intuited my musical interests. She has tailored my lessons to those interests, all the while managing a careful balance between fun and appropriate challenges. I have progressed much more quickly than I thought possible and, more importantly, am having a blast. I could not recommend Summer more highly.
I've worked with a lot of private music teachers over the years for multiple instruments, and Summer is one of the best! What stands out the most, aside from her excellent musicianship and relevant teaching methods, is that she genuinely cares about her students and how they are progressing. Summer has a gift for knowing how to push the student to progress, but also counterbalancing that dynamic by reassuring the student to be kind to her/himself throughout the learning process. I highly recommend Summer to anyone else looking to learn piano or guitar!
I have been looking for an instructor for quite some time and finding Summer was a stroke of luck! She is an amazing instructor and a pleasure to work without.
Summer is very patient and professional. I am so enjoyed with her lesson.
Our 6th grade daughter loves Summer and has been improving so much.
Great!
I'm a singing teacher and decided to take some piano lessons and get so lucky finding Summer! She is a fantastic teacher, great listener, amazing at figuring out how to teach you what you want to learn. On top of all that she is a wonderful person who makes lessons so enjoyable and fun.
Summer as been teaching both my daughter's, ages 7 & 11, for little over a year now and we couldn't be happier. I don't know how she does it, patience of an angel, but the girls are growing with their lessons and their love for both piano & guitar weekly. She is always encouraging and full of joy. Summer is a great listener and lets my girls have input in what music they want to learn. It is funny how the music they pick out, fits their personalities so well. Summer is extremely hardworking and punctual. We love to "virtually" invite her in our home every week. We hope one day to meet and see her play in person. Until then we look forward to our weekly sessions with her.
Summer is an excellent teacher! She was very accommodating and encouraging. Looking forward to future lessons!
Summer is an amazing piano teacher. Her positive, encouraging and professional demeanor is like no other. She teaches 3 of my children piano:ages 14, 10, & 8 & she caters to each of their individual personalities, abilities and learning styles. I am amazed at how far each of them have come in just a year. It is so nice to see each of them sit down at the piano and just relax and have fun playing a tune. She has instilled a confidence in them that carries over into every aspect of their life. We are so grateful that the kids have fallen in love with piano, but I completely attribute that love to Summer’s style of teaching. Having a teacher that is so positive and encouraging is such a blessing.
My daughter is so happy with her lessons from Summer. She does a great job individualizing the curriculum, and even making the more monotonous parts engaging. Highly recommend.
I have always wanted to learn to play the piano. At the age of 50 I decided it was a perfect time! I picked Summer and it was the best choice I ever made!! She is such a great , patient teacher. She explains every thing so thoroughly that I had no problems understanding her! I caught on and achieved my goal of playing my favorite song, "Claire De lune" and more, I may not sound like a concert pianist, but I am proud of my accomplishment. It never would have happened with out such a fabulous teacher!
This is from my daughter who is taking lessons with Summer: “Summer has really helped me learn guitar. I have learned 20 songs now with her and she speeds things up if it is too easy and she lets me learn another song if one is too hard. I like her a lot.”
Summer is my 6 year old daughters guitar teacher. She has been phenomenal! In eight weeks she’s taught her all her cords, three songs, and she’s even learned how to write music! Summer is a patient and kind teacher who offers clear instructions and has good classroom management skills. I highly recommend her.
Best instructor ever! We love her!
Brilliant!
summer is my favorite teacher because she is so kind and she lets you chose what you want to learn, and she cares about your opinion
I was so impressed with our lesson with Summer. She is a natural teacher and inspired my child in just 1 lesson. We are so excited to continue lessons with her.
Summer is skilled, knowledgeable and most importantly my daughter loves learning from her.
My daughter, Julia, is a beginner, and she loves Summer, and really appreciates Summer's teaching style!! Julia will definitely continue her online lessons. Summer is an empathetic, caring, super talented "rock star" instructor!!!
She was very good and really knew what she was doing and explained things very well!
My daughter loves the lessons!
a
Summer is amazing. She is very intuitive to the students needs and when they need to change gears. She is extremely positive and supportive of the students challenges. We couldn't be happier with our choice of instructors.

Summer Individualized each lesson for my son, daughter, and myself!
Summer is very thorough and competent. She does a great job teaching my daughter the many layers of music!
My daughter loves Summer! She told me that she explains the “why” and is opening whole new worlds to her in music!!!
Great experience!!
Summer is a great teacher. I have progressed farther than I thought I would have in such a short time.
My 13 year old daughter had a great first lesson with Summer. She felt encouraged and supported as she entered into the world of music through the piano.
Amazing she’s perfect. Learned all I need to know. Can’t wait for future lessons to get so much better. Truly greatful
I'm taking basic recording with Summer, She is excellent, knowledgeble and easy talk to. Marcus
Summer is fantastic. We first had her as an in-home instructor in Manhattan, and now that she has moved to California, we have her online. She is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about music, has introduced the kids to different genres, music theory and online music practice apps to keep them engaged and learning. She gives them homework "listening assignments" to help develop their ear for music. The kids have grown so much in their love of music and their ability to sight-read, play and understand music theory.
Summer is the best! She has taught my children throughout their middle childhood into their teens and during this time has introduced them to many different genres of music, which they have particularly enjoyed. In that way, she has not only taught them to play the piano excellently but has instilled in them an appreciation for music. In addition to being super-nice, patient, open-minded and very well organized, she challenges her students ceaselessly and pushes them to reach their potential. She employs a variety of different teaching methods and adjusts her style to the learner in front of her. My children related to her extremely well and they loved her. Highly recommend
Summer is one of the best piano teachers I ever had. She makes learning piano really fun and is extremely patient with her students. It was sometimes a challenge taking lessons on a consistent basis due to my work schedule but we always managed to get around it somehow. I really enjoyed my lessons and feel that they have helped improve my skills tremendously. Thanks Summer!!
We have had the pleasure of having Summer as a piano teacher for two kids and a parent. She is an outstanding teacher! Summer knows how to judiciously adapt to the different traits of the students (young or old), and to bring out the immense joy of learning to play an instrument.
Summer has been my teacher for about a year. It was a wonderful learning experience for me. She inspired me to work hard and I learned so much. Jazz, bossa, the blues and standards were the genre's we worker on. She taught me how to clap to get my timing down. Great person and a skilled instructor!!!!
Summer is such a great teacher! I’d taken piano lessons as a kid and wanted to return to it as an adult and I’m so glad I did! She really tailors the lessons to focus on the type of songs I’m interested in playing but also puts a real emphasis on learning the basics of theory to build off of for future songs. Highly recommend!!
My daughter Isabella has been taking guitar lessons with Summer for the last 3 years and we all love her. She is a dedicated and loving teacher. She is the reason why Isa loves and enjoys music.
Summer has been teaching my 3 children piano for over a year and a half, she has helped them grow as musicians and showed them a love for playing. I love over-hearing their lessons as she always begins by asking them about their day, she is truly kind and delightful. My children are 17, 14, and 10 and they have tremendous respect for her. She has taught each of them at their individual level and customized their lessons accordingly. Summer's musical knowledge and talent seem endless. She never ceases to impress us.
I’m a 50+ year old that’s been working with Summer for three years studying music theory. She is a talented musician and passionate educator that has helped me advance my knowledge in ways that I never thought possible.
Summer was great! She kept the interest of my son in the lesson and got a lot done. She was very positive and upbeat and reallly seemed to have a great rapport with kids.
She is great with my special needs son very patient and laid back. Which is what he needs. Highly recommend her.
Summer is a wonderful teacher. She has all the necessary attributes...so pleasant and patient, very kind and thoughtful, explains points with clarity, offered helpful ideas to assist me in overcoming my stumbling blocks. All in all, I am so happy to have her as my teacher, and I know I will reach my goal with her at my side.
I THINK YOU ARE A GREAT TEACHER PLEASE WROTE ME DIRECT SO WE CAN TALK BETTER OK [email protected]
Summer was a well organized instructor, highly skilled at adapting a lesson to the level of the student, which in my case was very low. She was thorough in her instructions, and provided detailed explanations as well as suggestions to increase the ability to grasp and retain the material. The material she crafted to leave behind for practice seems appropriate to build skills and confidence. Overall, an excellent instructor.
A knowledgable musician. Summer has gone to College for music and you can sense this right away.
Summer is fantastic. Wonderful with our children. Great patience. She crafts a tailored yet demanding curriculum.
Summer is such a fantastic, experienced teacher! She is wonderful with teaching children who are brand new to piano (mine are aged 6 and 8), and who are across the spectrum of motivation. She tailors the lesson to their ability and finds fun ways to teach note-reading, rhythm and music theory. Already my kids have jumped in their music skills. I couldn't recommend her more highly.
Summer is a fantastic teacher. As a not-quite-beginner who has been frustrated by teachers in the past that always seem disappointed by my progress or adhere too strictly to a specific teaching methodology, Summer has been a breath of fresh air. She's an exceptionally talented pianist, has guided me through some pieces i couldn't hope to have negotiated on my own, and I'm already seeing the benefits of her guidance on technique and musical theory. Genuinely the best piano teacher I've had.
Very knowledgeable teacher! Im looking forward to my future lessons!
Summer is wonderful! She figured out very quickly exactly what we needed to work on to get to my goals. She is friendly and on time. Highly recommended.
Summer is the best. Always prompt, super positive and incredibly helpful.
Summer has been a great teacher I used to play piano, but hadn't played in about 8 years. I decided to start up again and Summer has been great at getting me back into the swing of things at a good pace. Highly recommended!
Fantastic Instructor Summer is an outstanding guitarist and a phenomenal teacher. She goes above and beyond to tailor lessons to my own musical liking and goals. She is extremely patient and really sets a tone that is conducive to learning.
Wonderful Experience Summer was an excellent instructor. This was my first time learning any instrument and I have no background in music. Summer was very patient and helpful guiding me through the basics. She's also great at molding lessons for the student and made sure I was learning exactly what I wanted. I was waiting a long time to start taking lessons, but so glad I did. I highly recommend Summer as an instructor!

Teaching Style
Students learn songs they love to play while also honing important skills such as learning how to practice effectively, note reading, rhythm, ear training, and technique, as well as composing, improvisation, and music theory. Lessons cover the practical skills students need to develop musical fluency, creativity, and confidence so playing your instrument is a breeze.
We work together to develop your musicianship and make learning music fun by sparking curiosity and building intrinsic motivation to learn. Learning music is far more than just learning songs and scales. The best musicians have strong foundations in music theory, creative thinking, problem-solving, and artistic expression, so that's exactly what we learn in our lessons.
Curriculum
Every student is unique and so are their musical interests. I draw on 15 years of teaching experience (plus my own 26 years of studying music) to craft individualized lesson strategies to help my students fulfill their musical potential. We'll learn:
-
Songs you love to play
-
Effective practicing skills informed by neuroscience
-
Music theory and the building blocks of music, like rhythm, chords, and scales
-
Confidence and curiosity about music
-
Reading sheet music and learning music by ear (equally important skills!)
-
Creativity and artistic exploration
-
Effortless technique
-
Composition & songwriting
-
…and wherever else your curiosity leads us!
I'll provide a majority of the lesson materials (sheet music, worksheets, etc), but students still need the following:
-
a three ring binder with sheet protectors
-
a metronome
-
a piano/keyboard or guitar at home
-
Guitar students also need a guitar tuner & music stand
-
Vocal students need access to a device & speaker to play practice tracks from. It is helpful to have a keyboard or piano, but it is not required
