About

Taylor Sapanara has been teaching privately for 8 years. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Viola Performance from Arizona State University and is currently pursuing a Master's in Viola Performance from University of Colorado, Boulder. She has studied with viola pedagogues Susan Dubois, Jeffery Irvine, Carol Rodland, Nancy Buck, and Erika Eckert. She holds section viola positions with Symphony of the Rockies, the Boulder Symphony, as well as substitution positions with the Greeley Philharmonic, West Valley Symphony, and Longmont Symphony Orchestra. Currently she teaches beginning and intermediate viola at El Sistema Colorado.

Teaching Style

I focus mainly on compassionate teaching, and leading students to develop their own conclusions about their playing. I have studied the pedagogical lineage of Karen Tuttle primarily, which focuses on freedom and movement in one's playing. I believe it's most important to cultivate a positive environment for learning where students are encouraged to not only show up for lessons, but also for themselves in the practice room.

Currently in the process of getting training to teach Suzuki Viola Book 1.

Curriculum

Student texts will vary based upon ability level. However, for beginners I always suggest purchasing a copy of Essential Elements Book 1 for your instrument. These texts provide a comprehensive guide for students and parents alike, regardless of musical background.

Most texts will be discussed with student and parents (if applicable), typically downloadable versions can be found online, or I can send pdfs in an email :)
