About

Tom Teasley – Global Percussionist, Educator, and Composer

Welcome! I’m Tom Teasley, an award-winning percussionist and educator offering online lessons in world percussion, handpan, frame drum, improvisation, drumset fusion, and rhythm for wellness. My professional virtual studio features a three-camera setup for multiple angles and high-quality sound, ensuring a clear and immersive learning experience. With extensive experience teaching and performing throughout the world, I bring a global perspective to every lesson and guide students of all levels in discovering their own creative voice.

The Washington Post has called me “a musical wizard”, and Drum! Magazine named me World Percussionist of the Year. I’ve performed and taught in over 30 countries as a cultural envoy for the U.S. State Department, sharing music as a bridge between cultures.

My Teaching Philosophy

I believe rhythm is a universal language that connects cultures, people, and creative expression. My approach blends traditional technique with improvisation, so every lesson becomes an exploration of sound, culture, and personal creativity.

Students can expect lessons that are:

  • Customized – Adapted to your goals, whether you’re a beginner finding your first pulse or an advanced musician seeking improvisational fluency.

  • Interactive & Playful – Making music together in real time, with a focus on listening, response, and creativity.

  • Cross-Cultural – Drawing from traditions of the Middle East, India, Africa, the Americas, and jazz, always connecting rhythm to its cultural roots.

  • Fusion-Oriented – Integrating hand percussion and drumset, showing how global drumming languages enhance modern performance.

  • Holistic – Incorporating breath, movement, and sound healing concepts for students seeking a deeper connection beyond technique.

My goal is to help every student not just learn rhythms, but unlock their own creativity, passion, and self-expressionwhile discovering their unique voice through percussion.

Curriculum

I use a blend of classic percussion texts and specialized resources I’ve developed through decades of teaching and performing worldwide. Depending on the student’s goals, we may work with:

  • An American Approach to World Percussion (my own book, Alfred Music)

  • Stick Control – George Lawrence Stone

  • Progressive Steps to Syncopation – Ted Reed

  • Mitch Peters – Intermediate and Advanced Snare Drum Studies

  • José Eduardo Gramani – Rítmica (advanced rhythmic studies)

  • John Riley – The Art of Bop Drumming and related texts

  • plethora of my own specialized PDFs, including world rhythm etudes, improvisation exercises, handpan studies, and cross-cultural groove breakdowns

All students receive tailored materials designed for their level — from beginners learning their first rhythms to advanced players exploring global hybrid improvisation.
