Tyler Seton
About
Hello!
My name is Tyler Seton, I am 34, and I am a vocal coach based out of RI.
I started singing in middle school choir and got bit by the bug. I started doing musicals and various plays and continued to do so through college where I got my BFA in Musical Theatre.
I was in NJ All State Choir for 4 years and All Eastern Choir where I was 1st Tenor 2. I got countless awards from many thespian competitions as well as for the roles I played in high school and into college. This is the brief version.
Then after graduating college I was faced with the tragic loss of my father. I devoted time to writing my own music and became a singer songwriter. I started to get involved in mental health awareness as well as working with kidswho needed an artistic outlet to help with their troubles in their personal lives. I haven't looked back since.
Just to specify (and it will be specified again below), I teach you how to find your voice, how to tackle specific genres successfully, use mimicry to help stylize your sound, and most of all have fun while doing it.
I am not a vocal teacher. Only difference is I do not teach music theory and I only include the standard practices associated with being a vocal teacher versus a vocal coach.
Teaching Style
I am relatively easy to work with. I like to make sure my students are practicing in their free time. I can coordinate this and help you create a schedule around your everyday routine. Repetition is important for muscle memory. This is the bulk of your homework while being coached by me.
I want students to feel comfortable with expressing their emotions through the music.
There will be days where we tackle a song that speaks to you in a way regular human interaction does not. As a performer it it's important to draw from this. It helps create vulnerability which is important if you want to truly connect with your audience.
The last thing, we aim for progress not perfection.
Curriculum
We start out with the basics:
- Digging into why you want to sing, find your own voice, and what that means to you. Do you view this as a hobby? As something you'd consider as a career? How serious are you about this?
- Teaching breathing exercises to help build diaphragm strength and teach proper diaphragmatic breathing.
- Utilizing the strength gained from each weeks diaphragm training to incorporate tonal exercises and warm ups.
- Picking artists and the songs you vocally resonate with that have a similar sound and range to your voice.
- Help students through different song writing processes and arrangements as well as help them dive into writing their own original music.
- Don't worry, there is a whole lot more too!
- There aren't really any recommended texts for my coaching classes. If text or other items are required at any point it will be implemented depending on the students personal learning style and needs. If anything, search for Doctor Vox. This device helps build vocal muscle strength and is a great warm up tool. We can discuss that more during your first lesson.
Since I am a vocal coach, I'd recommend also having a vocal teacher as well.
