About

Wesley Rubim is a Brazilian musician, composer, and multi‑instrumentalist, graduated with excellence in Jazz Trombone from the Jazz Institute of the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK).

He began his professional career as Principal Trombone of the Heliopolis Symphony Orchestra in São Paulo, before joining the Tom Jobim Orchestra, where he performed with some of Brazil’s most respected artists, including Guinga, Nailor Proveta, Vanessa Moreno, Gabriel Grossi, Zélia Duncan, Hamilton Godoy, and Léa Freire.

Following these experiences, Wesley was invited to pursue his studies in Europe, completing his degree at the UdK in Berlin. Over the years, he has performed in diverse settings ranging from symphonic to jazz and contemporary music, sharing the stage with internationally renowned artists such as Randy Brecker, Jim McNeely, Andrea Bocelli, and José Carreras, among others.

Teaching Style

Wesley’s teaching approach is intuitive, creative, and centered on musical expression. He believes that technique and theory are essential not as rigid systems, but as tools that enable artistic freedom and authenticity.

His lessons blend sound development, rhythm, repertoire, and improvisation, always tailored to each student’s needs and level. Wesley strives to create a supportive and inspiring learning environment that combines professionalism with enthusiasm — helping each student to grow technically, think musically, and express themselves confidently through their instrument.

Curriculum

My teaching method is based on an adaptive and student‑centered approach that balances technical development, musical understanding, and creative exploration. Each lesson is tailored to the student’s needs, experience, and personal goals — whether focused on building a strong foundation, improving sound and technique, or deepening improvisation skills.

I work with a mix of listening, playing, and systematic exercises, encouraging students to connect their ears, mind, and instrument. Improvisation and repertoire are introduced progressively, always in a musical and inspiring context.

For materials, I recommend different methods depending on the student’s goals. Some of the texts and resources I often use include:

  • Arban’s Complete Method for Trombone
  • Bordogni – Melodious Etudes for Trombone
  • Jazz transcriptions and lead sheets (adapted to each level)
  • Personalized exercises and play‑along tracks prepared for each student

The objective is to combine technical control with musical expression, guiding students to find their own sound and artistic identity while gaining confidence and joy in making music.
