William Goodwin
About
I am a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and Florida State University. I have worked professionally in an established string quartet (Lindsayan), a Piano trio (Arlington), performed with Orchestras (recently leading the viola section of the Ulster Orchestra, in Belfast, Northern Ireland), at respected national chamber music festivals, and for studio recordings in a wide variety of genres. I have also been both and adjunct professor and also have held a full time Faculty position (at Eastern Kentucky University).
Teaching Style
I believe my role is to teach you how to practice. I focus on how to effectively use practice time to achieve results. While there is no substitute for hard work, if the effort is just to fill a set time slot in your day, it won't be as interesting or effective. It is Important to approach violin and viola with an understanding of what you want to achieve and techniques tailored to solving those problems.
There is no such thing as a "bad" lesson, unless you haven't improved during that lesson, and leave the lesson without a clear idea about how to further improve from that point. Your effort outside of lessons will influence how fast that improvement happens, so that matters, as well. A lesson won't always be fun, but it shouldn't be oppressive or something to fear. But I will push you to achieve your goals.
Curriculum
I use scales and arpeggios, of course. Both from my own simple system, which a student can understand and apply, and then from Gilels, Galamian, and Granat (Heifetz scales) for more advanced students. Etudes books of Mazas, Dont, Rode, Kreutzer, and others as appropriate to level and need, and pieces as the interest and development of the student warrant. Whatever we study together, we will do that with reference to developing your ability to apply useful practice techniques in order to get past learning notes, in order to develop musical expression and control.
