About

Originally from Springdale, Arkansas, Jason Potts is an active teacher and performer in Oklahoma and Northwest Arkansas. He joined the Langston University faculty in 2023 as an Adjunct Instructor of trombone and euphonium and the Wichita State University faculty as an Adjunct Lecturer of trombone in 2025.

Jason earned his Bachelor of Music Performance from Ouachita Baptist University, where he won the McBeth Concerto Competition in 2015 and 2016. He also led the school’s jazz combo and brass quintet. Jason earned his master’s in music performance as a teaching assistant at Oklahoma State University. During his time there, he was a finalist in or won multiple national and international competitions, including the International Women’s Brass Conference, Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Brass, Yamaha/Xeno Tenor Trombone Solo Competition, Hyechka Collegiate Competition, Eastern Music Festival Concerto Competition, and the Oklahoma State University Concerto Competition.

Since 2018, Jason has performed with multiple professional orchestras, including the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Tulsa Symphony, Tulsa Opera, Norman Philharmonic, Fort Smith Symphony, and the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas. He has also played with other local ensembles such as the Oklahoma City Winds and as Principal Trombonist of the national award-winning Frontier Brass Band.

In addition to his university positions, Jason is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Trombone Performance at the University of Oklahoma, teaches private lessons, masterclasses, and leads studio classes and small ensembles for the Deer Creek, Mustang, Yukon, and Casady school systems.

Teaching Style

I put a lot of emphasis on teaching students how to learn for themselves. I ask a lot of questions in lessons, provide as many perspectives on various topics as I can, and give several different practice strategies to cover individual facets of playing.
