About
What makes a drummer sound like themselves?
For me, this is one of the most important questions in drumming.
I am a professional drummer, educator and composer based in Denmark. I hold a Master’s Degree in Pop Drums from Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam, and I am currently pursuing a second Master’s Degree in Jazz/Pop Composition at the Southern Danish Conservatory (SDMK).
My teaching approach is built around four fundamental elements: Sound, Timing, Groove and Phrasing — explored through creativity.
I believe that these elements are not meant to be learned as a collection of techniques or rules. They are the foundation from which a drummer can develop their own musical identity.
Through creativity, experimentation and personal expression, I encourage students to explore these elements in their own way, make conscious musical choices, and gradually develop a sound and language that feel genuinely theirs.
For me, learning the drums is not simply about acquiring more vocabulary or playing more complex things. It is about discovering how you want to express yourself through the instrument, and developing the awareness and creativity to make your playing unique.
Over the years, I have developed my own teaching approach through professional performance, academic study, composition and extensive work with rhythm and musical expression. I have also written and self-published two books on drumming and rhythm, Drum Phrasing System and Metric Modulation for Drums and Composition, and released my own album of original compositions, Inside the Life.
I work with students who want to go beyond simply learning drum patterns and develop a deeper understanding of musical expression, creativity and personal identity.
Lessons can be tailored to your goals, whether you are an intermediate or advanced drummer, developing your skills as a session musician, exploring improvisation and composition, or simply looking for a more personal and creative approach to drumming.
The goal is not to play more. It’s to make every note mean something — and make it your own.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is personalized, musical and practical.
I do not believe that every drummer should follow the same path. Instead, I try to understand where each student is technically and musically, what they want to achieve, and what kind of drummer they want to become.
My lessons are built around five elements:
Sound — developing touch, dynamics, articulation and a personal drum sound.
Timing — understanding pulse, subdivision, time feel, internal time and the ability to play with consistency and musical freedom.
Groove — learning how to make a rhythm feel good, interact with other musicians and understand the role of the drums within the music.
Phrasing — developing musical vocabulary, structure, dynamics and the ability to make fills and rhythmic ideas actually communicate something.
Creativity — improvisation, experimentation, developing ideas and finding your own musical language.
My goal is not simply to help students play more. It is to help them understand why they are playing something and make every note meaningful.
Curriculum
My lessons are built around the individual student rather than a fixed curriculum.
Depending on your goals and level, we may work on:
• Sound, touch, dynamics and articulation
• Timing, subdivision and internal pulse
• Groove and pocket
• Fills and musical phrasing
• Improvisation and creativity
• Contemporary pop, rock, funk and R&B drumming
• Advanced rhythmic concepts
• Metric modulation
• Rhythmic displacement
• Drum set vocabulary
• Song and repertoire analysis
• Recording and studio playing
• Developing your own musical voice
I often use recordings, transcriptions, play-alongs and personalized exercises as part of the lessons. Rather than simply giving students exercises to practice, I aim to explain the musical purpose behind them and show how they can be applied creatively.
For students interested in deeper rhythmic study, I also draw from concepts developed in my own books, Drum Phrasing System and Metric Modulation for Drums and Composition.
Students do not need to purchase a specific method book before starting. Materials and exercises can be selected or created according to the student's level, goals and musical interests.
