Mark Peters
About
Hello and welcome to Lessonface! My name is Mark Peters and I have been playing piano nearly all of my life. My major experience is with classical piano, but over the course of my Doctoral work in West Virginia, I have also grown a passion for jazz piano as well.
I would say my favorite part about teaching is learning how each students' mind approaches problems and trying to discover the best manner in which to approach their specific learning style. I love teaching piano of all levels and to students of all ages. Whether your goal is simply to learn some piano basics or to begin a journey of a life of musical enjoyment, I'd be happy to help with either.
Some of my favorite classical composers include the greats, such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Chopin, though I have always had a passion for Russian composers like Mily Balakirev and Alexander Scriabin. My Doctoral studies included both jazz and classical elements, culminating in a final recital that featured works by both Hiromi and Nikolai Kapustin. Other Jazz favorites include: Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans.
I have taught both in Kansas, as well as West Virginia here in the United States. Though my degrees are in Piano Performance, all three of my degrees included a number of pedagogical studies to assist in methods of teaching. I have taught students of all ages, from local music schools up through University Undergraduate Piano Proficiency levels.
Please let me know if you have any questions! I look forward to teaching you piano soon!
Teaching Style
I like to keep the lesson relaxed but focused. Students who can be themselves often provide a number of subtle clues as to how they will learn best. Understanding each student's manner of thinking and problem solving nearly always leads to more productive lessons.
I teach all levels of Classical piano and I understand a decent amount of jazz. Depending on the student's individual needs, I can prep them for college entrance exams or simply work on whatever music they like. I am always open for discussion on how the lessons are progressing, any concerns you may have, as well as giving suggestions as needed or requested. I like to keep communication open so students feel comfortable expressing their concerns as well as build confidence in their playing. Please let me know how I can help you better!
Curriculum
I have taught using a number of different method books, Faber being the most popular. After some basic skills are mastered from these early books, we can move toward some of the easier classical literature or work on some basic jazz.
