Grant Houston
About
As a performing violinist based in Boston, Massachusetts, Grant Houston connects with communities through fresh, creative musical expression to take audiences on emotional journeys. Equally committed as a teacher working with students of all experience levels, he has guided violin students both privately and as part of the New England Conservatory Preparatory School and community programs like El Sistema. Deeply invested in the belief that all people can experience the joy of making music, Grant frequently brings performances to interactive events at schools, senior homes, libraries, and other community settings.
Equally enthusiastic as a music-maker on local and international stages, Grant's recent travels have seen him give concerts at the Moritzburg Festival Academy in Germany, the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program in Vermont, the Schlern International Music Festival in Italy, and the Music Academy of the West in California, where he performed with renowned pianist Jeremy Denk on a guest artist recital. Additionally, Grant is the violinist of the award-winning Trio Gaia, a piano trio formed in 2018 with pianist Andrew Barnwell and cellist Yi-Mei Templeman. With Trio Gaia, Grant has won accolades including the Vianello Family Audience Prize at the 2019 Plowman National Competition, and the distinction of Honors Ensemble at the New England Conservatory. Recently, Trio Gaia has performed at venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and Boston’s Jordan Hall.
Grant Houston holds a Bachelor of Music with Honors from the New England Conservatory of Music.
Teaching Style
Learning is a collaboration! I'm excited to help you make the growth you want to see in your music-making. Learning a skill like playing the violin might make you feel out of your comfort zone, so our work together will be a partnership: your goals and dreams combined with the expertise I can offer to help your path be that much easier. I ask questions, invite you to reflect on your progress, and provide positive feedback. Choosing to work with a professional isn't about committing to 'my way' of learning the violin, it's about getting to where you want to be efficiently without burnout.
