About
My name is Colleen Johnson. I teach private lessons and lead summer camps for music students age 8 to 40 years old. I have been touring in bands and writing music for over 15 years. In my younger years, I was privately coached in voice and competed in choir and solo competitions. Now, I teach with Bay Area Girls Rock Camp here in beautiful Oakland, California. Some of my musical projects include Silver Shadows, Polka Dot Dot Dot, Upside Drown, and Flying Circles.

Teaching Style
My teaching style is based on your unique needs. Normally, I use a combination of technical exercises along with popular songs that appeal to your taste. Ultimately, it is about you feeling engaged and inspired while you cultivate your own personal relationship with music. I am especially interested in helping beginners of all ages who need a little extra boost to really open up their talents.

I started and managed the band, Silver Shadows, based in my current home of Oakland, CA. We released two LPs, one on Gilgongo Records and another on Volar Records. We toured the western United States several times.
Flying Circles (Oakland, CA)

2015-present
Flying Circles is my current project, a collaboration with my partner, Preston Bryant (AJJ, Spirit Adrift). We have released our first studio album in 2017 on Antiquated Future, and toured the US twice. Our music has a strong social justice lens. We are currently recording our second studio album to be released at the end of 2020.
