Liam Brolly
About
Hi! I'm Liam, and I'm a professional Violist who has performed internationally with orchestras such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Orchestra Victoria in Australia, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra to name just a few. I have played chamber music with some of the most notable musicians of our time including members of the Tokyo, Edinburgh, and St. Lawrence String Quartets, Violinists Anthony Marwood & Movses Pogossian, Cellist Robert DeMaine, 1st Concert Master of the Berlin Philharmonic Noah Bendix-Balgley and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw.
I hold a First Class Honours degree from the Royal College of Music, London, and an Artist Diploma from The Colburn School in Los Angeles where I was also a Teaching Fellow. I've been lucky enough to teach Violin and Viola at different levels throughout my career so far, including Beginner Students at The Colburn School, Intermediate Students at the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland, and Advanced students from Edinburgh Napier University and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
Every lesson you receive will be expertly balanced with creativity, and hard work. I love helping my students refine their musical voice through clear technical understanding and practice.
From absolute beginners to advanced students on the cusp of their university studies, I am able to cater to your, or your child's, specific needs and goals.
I look forward to working with you,
Liam
Teaching Style
After graduating from The Royal College of Music, I performed regularly with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and Royal Northern Sinfonia. After 5 years of performing professionally, I was offered a place at The Colburn School in Los Angeles where I received an Artist Diploma. Since moving to the U.S.A, I have performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and have played as Guest Principal Viola with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and Orchestra Victoria in Melbourne, Australia. I have also performed with Scottish Chamber Orchestra as Guest Co-Principal Viola.
I have recorded chamber music for BBC Radio 3 and performed regularly at the BBC Proms and Edinburgh International Festival. I have taken part in music festivals including Aurora Chamber Music Festival & Masterclasses, and Music Academy of the West where I attended the prestigious String Quartet Seminar studying with the Takacs Quartet. During the 2018/19 season, I made my debuts with the renowned Monday Evening concert Series, Dilijan Chamber Series, and Salastina Music Society.
My teaching style varies between students. As much as possible I will cater to the needs of each individual. In general, I like to start beginner students with the Suzuki books as they are great for helping to set up foundational technique, rhythm, and musical literacy. For more advanced students I like to work through different repertoire that I feel is of core value to the understanding of the instrument. We will work through a broad range of styles and supplement these with scales and studies.
Curriculum
For an insight into my teaching style please feel free to book a lesson. I do not believe in a 'one-size-fits-all' system. Every person is different and we all learn in different ways, so it's a great pleasure helping students find out what their learning style is and how that can mature over time.
I love to watch my students grow more confident in each lesson. Learning a musical instrument can really help us find or reinforce our personality, and helping someone on that journey is extremely gratifying.
