Learn to play the trumpet from a working trumpet player with 15+ years professional experience!
Caleb moved from his hometown of Wichita, Kansas, to Chicago in 2008 to attend DePaul University, where he received his Bachelor’s in Trumpet Performance studying under Matt Lee and Tage Larsen. Since then, Caleb has picked up a variety of regular gigs across a wide spectrum of styles, genres, and types of events.
Caleb regularly performs in Chicago with his original funk band Nasty Snacks. He also plays with The Chicago Players and The Hemispheres, bands known for performing at weddings and other high-profile events in the Chicago area and beyond. Additionally, Caleb occasionally tours with Bassel & The Supernaturals, a group that blends soulful melodies and funk-inspired rhythms to tell the story of Bassel Almadani's experience as a first-generation Syrian-American. Caleb also performs with swinging pop band The Imperial Sound, with roots in 1970's AM radio and Chicago soul, and with the Victor Torres Band, a collection of Chicagoland-based touring and session musicians who create an eclectic musical journey through funk/soul-rock instrumentals. Every Sunday he also performs alongside an amazing gospel choir at Lighthouse Church Of All Nations.
He has also played the national anthem for the president at opening night of the Chicago Bulls season, been featured at Chicago Blackhawks games, as principal trumpet in symphony orchestras, in pit orchestras and in the DePaul Screamin’ Demons Pep Band at Madison Square Garden. Caleb also regularly lends his solo talents to wedding parties and church services, and is one-fourth of the Chicago for-hire horn section Revolution Horns. Other musical endeavors include a performance on the Steve Harvey Show, playing trumpet for the Broadway musical I Love Lucy in downtown Chicago, and a coveted chance to perform in master classes for his idols Adolph “Bud” Herseth and Chris Martin.
Caleb has been teaching privately in the Chicago area since 2012 and is eager to teach students with any amount of experience, especially those who are eager to approach music from a variety of perspectives.

Caleb has been a great instructor to my son. He has been easy to work with always communicates and has been flexible when needed. Caleb and my son have been working together for over the past year and I have seen my son grow so much in his trumpet playing. My son definitely needed the one on one time that he was not able to receive from school and private lessons allowed for him to achieve that and improve his overall music knowledge and trumpet playing abilities.
Great first lesson. Super personable. Jumped right into slurs, long notes, and breath attacks.
Caleb was a great beginning trumpet tutor for my 13 year old son. He was friendly, engaging, and lessons were well structured, teaching my son everything from how to care for his instrument, to warm-up exercises, to the actual lesson. I appreciated his patience with my ADHD son and his willingness to impress upon him the need to practice outside of lessons if he wanted to improve. I highly recommend Caleb!
Caleb is awesome. He has single handedly made us a convert of remote music lessons! He communicates extremely well with younger kids, even though he has such extensive knowledge of music. My 10 year old son was super hesitant to start learning how to play the trumpet, but my son is all smiles throughout the entire lesson, and is self motivated to practice everyday! Caleb is an absolute gem.
I had played the trumpet in high school but had not played it since then for 40 years. I was wanting to get back into it to play some specific songs with some friends that play drums, guitars etc. Caleb was the perfect match to teach me the basics again, some music theory and then helping me learn and play the songs I wanted to play. He is so great to work with and will take you in any direction you want to go. And, he is so awesome playing the trumpet. He's amazing. He knows what he is talking about and can back it up. I highly recommend him to anyone at any level.
Caleb is an excellent teacher! He was patient and encouraging with my teenage son who can sometimes get very discouraged when he finds his work challenging. I hope some of Caleb's positive attitude rubs off on him. The improvement in my son's trombone playing after one lesson was impressive..
Caleb is calm and soft spoken. Just what our son needs.
Helped in multiple ways, really nice and easy to work with.
Caleb provides a supportive environment to learn basics, how to play fun music. I’ve been taking lessons for a while now and I’m enjoying the process “journey”..I wanted to learn and have fun and that is happening.
thanks again
Great teach, super knowledgeable and you can tell he really cares.
Caleb is very patient and personable. Toby really enjoyed his bugle lesson.
Caleb is a really thorough thoughtful teacher. It's clear that he has a good process introducing beginners to Trombone. My two sons (9 and 11 years old) had 4 Trombone lessons with him and walked away with great introductions to the instrument. I will definitely sign up for more lessons with Caleb if my son decides to play the Trombone.
My son wanted to switch from Percussion to Trumpet going into middle school, but his teachers were pushing back because he would be behind. Caleb helped him learn how to play the trumpet and make that switch. My son really enjoyed working with Caleb and he learned and grew as a musician. We highly recommend Caleb as he is wonderful to work with and is just a great teacher.
This is your guy. Really good, balanced teacher for my 9 year old. Focused but not strict, relaxed and curious but not a push over. Great sound too - my son and I were both very impressed with his playing, and that's the best kind of teacher to learn from imo.
Caleb knows when to interrupt with a tip or a useful instruction and knows how to frame it in a way that makes sense to the student.
Caleb was great! He is great with my 11 year old son. Looking forward to the next lesson. My son said he was really cool :)
amazing experience! very accommodating and patient (my son had his trumpet sent to be fixed for long time and Caleb did not get upset) we are looking forward for the next lessons!
Caleb is a warm, kind, patient person who is an exceptionally talented musician and teacher! My son started playing trumpet with Caleb in 5th grade. He is now a junior. He currently plays with the Whitney Young Jazz Band, as well as with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra-Jazz. Falling in love with playing trumpet has been a life changing experience! He has a deep love of music and he has a wonderful group of friends in the band. He couldn't have done it without Caleb's help!
Caleb is a fantastic and very patient teacher.
Caleb is an excellent teacher with a strong passion for music. I would strongly recommend him to anyone looking to learn and enjoy music. I have online lessons and his personal style helps to make me feel connected. He provides excellent context to the music I’m working on and helps me to understand and enjoy playing music at a level I have not experienced from other teachers.
A fanatical trumpet instructor. Highly recommend him to others.
Mr. Mitchell is an extremely knowledgeable instructor; I don't think there has ever been a theory or history question I have ever asked he hasn't been able to at least somewhat answer. In addition, he understands that everyone learns differently and that people have busy lives, so he has been able to work with me to best bring out my potential. Not to mention he is super personable and easy to talk to.
Living in a mountain town, I didn't have any options for lessons in high school besides online. Caleb was absolutely fantastic as a teacher, and really got me solid in the foundations of trumpet playing. He helped me make all-state band 3 times during high school, and guided me through the college audition process. I am now studying trumpet performance at the University of Denver, and Caleb had a huge hand in helping me get to where I am today!
Mr. Mitchell is a wonderful teacher, he has been teaching my son trumpet in person and online for the past 2 years. He is always creative in his approach to making a difficult instrument approachable! My son enjoys every lesson and at the end he has a smile on his face and a positive attitude!
Amazing teacher. Been trying to teach myself piano for a little over a year but i realized that i needed to get a teacher. I saw Caleb’s profile and saw that he was a Jazz musician and a trumpet player. I used to play trumpet and since i wanted to learn to improvise eventually i knew Caleb was my guy. So far the lessons have been extraordinary. Definitely feeling good about my direction. The problem I used to have with the trumpet was that i couldn’t play without sheet music. If you want to be able to improvise on an instrument you need a teacher to teach you how to do just that. If this is something you want, then Caleb will get you there on Piano and Trumpet I am sure.
Very good lesson. I am an older Lerner and want to go as far as I can in leaning trumpet. First lesson was great. Thanks Caleb
Great first lesson and looking forward to more!
Caleb is a very insightful teacher.
Caleb was very patient with me and I appreciated that. I was a good lesson.
Excellent first lesson! My 10 year old said it was fun and from what I observed it was informative. Caleb seems to have a great positive attitude and great approach! Looking forward to more lessons!
Caleb is doing an excellent job teaching my eight year old son. He is incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and kind. As a busy homeschooling family of five, we appreciate so much Caleb’s willingness to come to our home, as well as his flexibility. My son looks forward to each lesson and finishes very encouraged and motivated. Thank you, Caleb!
Caleb is a gifted teacher. It has been remarkable to hear him give some instruction and then hear our son play the trumpet noticeably better right away! We are so happy with his lessons.
My son is really enjoying his introduction to trumpet! Caleb is so nice and patient. The ability to have the lessons at our home is critical and he was able to make that happen. Has been a super positive experience!
I decided to take lessons again after having played the trumpet for over 40 years, and Caleb has been a fantastic instructor for me. Helping me with fundamentals that I long since had forgotten, to exploring new techniques that improve my sound - my fellow band mates have asked me what have I been doing as they definitely have noticed the improvements I have made since starting lessons with Caleb. Highly recommended!
Went great, only one lesson in and we had a great learning experience
You couldn't ask for a better instructor than Caleb. He really knows the trumpet and how to play it, and manages to convey that in his teaching. My son responded really well to his calm, patient manner and felt very comfortable with him right away, which says a lot seeing as my son is fairly introverted and quiet and usually needs more time with people to get comfortable.
Caleb is great! Very easy to communicate with and an excellent approach to instruction.
My 17 year old daughter has had lessons with Caleb for over a month now and she really enjoys working with him:) She signed up for "customized" lessons. As messy and random as that sounds, Caleb brings progression and structure which allows her to learn and expand as a student and an artist. They begin their lessons with scales and exercises for finger coordination and dexterity, and then move on to reading and practicing with the metronome. Gradually, they segue to my daughter's favorite part, which is when she has him listen to a song that she likes (her genre of vocaloid or anime music which is not easily found--if at all--in printed music), and they both tinker on the piano by ear until they are satisfied with a dual-handed rendition--by portion or in entirety. Caleb then transcribes whatever they worked on and he additionally gives her homework for the next week. Caleb is patient and meticulous, soft-spoken, but direct. His approach to music and tailoring lessons to his students, is something that one cannot teach but must come from the soul. He is warm and friendly, and his passion for music translates to his method of teaching. I honestly cannot imagine anyone not benefiting from and enjoying his instruction. My daughter and I could not be more pleased:)
Excellent instructor and great person! Very welcoming, friendly, yet challenging. He knows his stuff and has clear command over the Trumpet literature (i.e. Arban's, Clarke's method).
Very responsive to emails and punctual. Works well with my son who is always excited for his weekly trumpet lessons. Caleb is friendly, warm, and cares about Music and teaching.
Caleb was recommended to me by friends when my son inquired about trumpet lessons to augment the lessons he was receiving at his school. My son is 11 years old. Caleb has been instrumental in making my son have a ton more confidence in his trumpet playing skills and has taught my son to become a better player. My son's school band was not a good fit for him so he left, but he insisted on continuing with lessons with Caleb. Now my son is able to take his trumpet experience with his "rock band" shows. Caleb is patient, well versed in music, and is incredibly talented. We take weekly lessons with Caleb and have been very happy with his teaching style and my son's ability to become a better trumpet player. I HIGHLY recommend Caleb for trumpet lessons for any age!
Caleb is both knowledgeable and passionate about music and he passes this on through excellent engaging lessons. After each lesson I feel I have progressed and his friendly approach helps to build confidence. I always look forward to my lessons with Caleb and would strongly recommend him.
Five Stars!!! Caleb is wonderful... friendly, professional, patient, and very talented. He's been a pleasure to work with, and my 12 year old son always looks forward to his weekly trumpet lessons.
Caleb is an amazing trumpet specialist and a wonderful wonderful trumpet teacher. My son is 13. He started taking private lessons from Caleb in Dec 2013 as a beginner. Caleb has been great throughout the 3 years. He is patient, fun, and firm. And he knows how to challenge a student and keep him interested. We are so glad we found him. An amazing teacher!
Caleb has been teaching my son trumpet for the past 4 years. He is a very talented teacher who is musically gifted, as well as patient and kind. Loving music and playing trumpet has enriched my son's life, both socially and emotionally. He is currently first chair in his middle school band and plans to pursue band in high school. His pleasure in playing with his peers and his pride in his accomplishments are wonderful to see. Last year, he played "New York, New York" as part of a three piece band at a school event and in March 2017, he will play the entire score of the Lion King with the pit orchestra for the 8th grade play. But the best part as a parent is seeing that he often walks around the house humming a random tune under his breath, even when he isn't aware of it. It makes me smile to see him be so happy! Thank you, Caleb!
Caleb tunes right into your experience level and has a ton to offer right from the beginning while being really easy to work with. We talked about goals and trumpet history and started structuring a new warmup routine. With Caleb's diverse performing experience, he can teach you about hip hop, funk, jazz, orchestral, and small ensemble brass work (plus probably some other stuff I don't know about yet).
I'm re-learning the basics almost 20 years later, and Caleb is making the material relateable and I'm excited to learn more. Only two lessons in so far, but I'm very optimistic about how things are going.
My 9year old is loving her lessons with Caleb. He is super patient with her many questions. I personally appreciate his willingness to let me watch/participate and his openness to new ways to approach helping her learn. He handled the differences in what she hears from her band teacher extremely well- being respectful of what the band leader said while explaining why we should really do something different.
Caleb is a great teacher. He has a hands-on teaching style integrated with music theory. He's also friendly and easy going, so he's suitable for any age. A big plus is, unlike your traditional lessons of learning x pieces and x scales, he works with you on what you're most interested in learning while blending in what you need to know. I highly recommend him!
Caleb has been my son’s trumpet instructor for almost 6 months now. He has a keen ability to get across everything needed for a highly effective online lesson. I cannot tell you what a HUGE convenience it's been for us to have these expert lessons in the comfort and convenience of our home. I would have to drive 45 minutes over a mountain pass to get to the nearest qualified instructor. In the middle of snowstorms, and even with my son in p.j.'s, we can have our lesson right here at home. In an ordinary lesson environment a parent usually is expected to leave the room. With Caleb, I can be nearby while my son receives his lesson. This is helpful for me to reinforce points that Caleb made during his lesson with my son when he is practicing during the week. Currently he's working with my son on his honor jazz band audition, as well as a classical oratorio piece that he'll be playing on tour in Europe with our local community orchestra. Caleb is qualified to teach any style of music. He’s super friendly but never loses his honesty with the student. We often have special requests for each lesson and Caleb is able to tailor each lesson to work on the new pieces and still fit in valuable instruction with scales and solid technique. Not only is Caleb a great teacher, but he is on many professional recordings, and is a regularly-working professional musician in Chicago. My son is very lucky to have him as an instructor. We're very impressed with Caleb and know you will be too!
Caleb is an excellent instructor and very attentive to to your needs and questions great instructor to work highly recommended!
Caleb is patient, creative, and understanding. My 13 year old son takes lessons from him and says that he is empathetic and easygoing, but still provides structure and clear instructions. Highly recommended!
Caleb was very friendly, obviously knowledgeable and right on time! Looking forward to many more lessons with him

really great re-introduction to understanding the keyboard - not just memorizing the keys
I have been taking lessons with Caleb for a few months now, starting as an adult beginner. Caleb works to help me see the big picture in order to facilitate a more comprehensive understanding rather than just teaching me to memorize. I have found his teaching style very effective, and am looking forward to growing with his continued instruction and guidance. I should also note that he's a real nice guy.

I had a great experience taking piano lessons with Caleb and would highly recommend him to any friend who was looking to take trumpet or piano lessons. He made sure to teach the theory behind the music, as well as the technique of playing it, and encouraged me to feel free to choose the direction, pace, and focus of the lessons.
Caleb is the best trumpet instructor I have ever had! He is thorough, explains his methods and why he is teaching what he is teaching, helps his students develop good practices that will be extremely beneficial down the line, and is flexible with how to structure a lesson depending on what you want out of it. On top of all that, he is amiable, interesting, and professional. I feel very good taking trumpet lessons from a professional trumpet player; especially this one.
My daughter very much enjoyed her first lesson with Caleb, and is very much looking forward to more! He is knowledgeable and easy to work with.
Good start to lessons. Look forward to learning more.

I can't really say enough good things about Caleb. His resume is an impressive one, but his personality and teaching style are far more impressive because those are things you can't get from a resume. My ten year old just completed her second session with Caleb and has already shown improvement of which she is super excited about, and can't wait to improve more under Caleb's tutelage.
Super friendly, flexible with time, and knowledgeable. I feel very comfortable learning this instrument with his guidance and instruction.
Caleb is great, he's both passionate and knowledgeable about playing trumpet and makes lessons enjoyable and informative. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking to start learning.
Excellent lesson. Very well done
As a first time student, Caleb took the time to explain the basics of playing the instrument, and focused both on strengths and weaknesses. Already booked our next session! I strongly recommend Caleb
Caleb M. Is a very talented music teacher. He makes the lesson professional and really understanding. Caleb makes the student come back to learn more and be interested in the lesson. Taking lessons with Caleb will show you results fast.

Caleb is the first music instructor we've ever worked with... but it's been a very positive experience thus far. He is professional, patient and talented. We look forward to every lesson with him!
My 9 year old son enjoys his trumpet lesson very much with Caleb.
Excellent instructor and great person! Very welcoming, friendly, yet challenging. He knows his stuff and has clear command over the Trumpet literature (i.e. Arban's, Clarke's method).
He is very patient but knowledgeable.
Caleb has been teaching my 13 year old son trumpet for 3 years. He is an amazingly kind and talented teacher who connects well with kids. My son loves his lessons and has made excellent progress. In fact, when he recently played the Sinatra song, "New York, New York", with two other children for the school play the enormous smile he had on his face was priceless! Caleb is a real find! I highly recommend him!
Caleb is terrific. He is a gifted musician and teacher. My two kids (10 and 11) look forward to lessons and are making great progress. He is reliable and effective. We are delighted to be working with him.

Caleb has been instrumental in making my son have a ton more confidence in his trumpet playing skills and has taught my son to become a better player. Now, when my son comes home from school-band practice he says that the "other" trumpet players aren't keeping up. :-) Caleb is patient, well versed in music, and is incredibly talented. We take lessons in his home and have been very happy with his teaching style and my son's ability to become a better trumpet player. I highly recommend Caleb for trumpet lessons for any age!
Caleb taught our 11 year old son for over a year. He connected well with him and was fun and encouraging yet firm and effective as a teacher. We would recommend Caleb to teach your aspiring trumpet player--you will be pleased with the results!
Caleb is an amazing trumpet specialist and a wonderful wonderful trumpet teacher. My son who is now 12 started taking private lessons with Caleb in Dec 2014 as a complete beginner. He has progressed so much in a little over a year that he is the best trumpetor in his middle school. And he may be performing in a jazz band with high schoolers this fall. This is greatly because of Caleb. He is incredible with children and teens. He is patient, fun, and firm. We are so glad we found him.
Great instructor that connected with my 8 year old son from the moment he walked into our home.

Teaching Style
I believe that the best way to teach a brass instrument, at any level, is simply to check in and make sure that the student has a great understanding of what a beautiful sound is on their instrument. This is done in a patient and positive environment, filled with the best possible music making to serve as a model to aspire to. With small, attainable goals and the encouragement to practice at least a small amount on a daily basis, you cannot help but improve while hopefully having a good time playing whatever music interests you. The journey is a bit different for everyone, but anyone can make a beautiful sound, and go from there!
Curriculum
I like to strike a balance of teaching out of various method books (depending on the student and their level of ability, some are more suitable than others of course and I help guide the way), and learning to play by ear, which can be almost anything the student wants to learn, provided it's not overly complicated for them. Technique has it's place, but is certainly not the whole story. Learning music that is fun, while at the same time learning to get better at your instrument, makes the overall process enjoyable and rewarding. Once you have the right tools, music is something that can be fulfilling for the rest of your life, especially when you learn to do it in a fun and healthy way.
