Graduate in music from the University of Sheffield, middle school music and choir teacher, and current master's student in Music Education at the University of Strasbourg, France.
Hello! My name is Melany Rice, I have been playing the flute for nearly 16 years and teaching for 6. I moved from Wisconsin to England at age 18, where I completed my bachelor's degree in Music and French at the University of Sheffield, a world top 100 university. I have over 15 years of experience playing the flute in groups such as the Wisconsin State Honors Band, the JMKAC Senior Honors Recital, the Sheffield University Orchestras, and now the Orchestre d'Harmonie Caecilia in Strasbourg. I've played as a guest soloist for the Sheffield University Symphony Orchestra and also for the Wakefield Cathedral concerts programme, as well as countless other symphonies, pit orchestras, bands, etc. I have experience teaching children from the ages of 5-14 as a flute instructor, choir director, and general music teacher. As a neurodivergent person myself, I also have experience working with students on the autism spectrum, ADHD, OCD, and other neurodivergent conditions. I've lived and studied in four different countries, so I have many flute methods and traditions under my belt! Lessons can be taught in English or in French.
Reviews from Another Lesson Platform
Melany's lessons have been spectacular
for my teenage daughter. She is great
at boosting confidence and is such a
wonderful positive influence. My daughter
genuinely looks forward to her lessons
every week!
Very friendly tutor, she cares a lot about
her students. Her feedback is very
structured and personalised.
Can I just start by saying how kind Melany
is! Just having an attitude as positive and
sweet as hers makes you want to learn
from her. She’s currently teaching my
middle schooler flute and my child loves
her! Not to mention, my daughter says
that after just two lessons, she has already
learned so much on how to improve her
technique. Highly recommend!
Professeure vraiment envie,
attentive, intéressante, très bonne
pédagogue. Je recommande !
Teaching Style
Learning begins when stress ends, so as a tutor I try my best to make learning enjoyable. My first priority is that you are comfortable and having fun. Lessons are personalized to the student's feedback, goals, pace, and artistic style.
I believe structure and routine, coupled with enjoyment and enthusiasm, are some of the most important aspects of music learning. At the request of my students, I am more than happy to provide lesson notes and practice instructions after lessons.
Curriculum
I don't typically follow one method book for flute students. I have a wide collection of method books, solo books, and étude books, and I usually will use snippets of various ones depending on the needs of the specific student. I always make an effort to take into account the style and preferences of the student I am teaching.
Many lessons are also technique and foundation-based, or theory-based, in which case I don't often rely heavily on print materials. Any materials we do use will be made available to you via Lessonface prior to (or during) the lesson.
However, I understand some students prefer to follow one specific book, especially children. In that case, I like using the Abracadabra Flute book or the Rubank Elementary Method for the Flute. If there are any method books that you have started studying and would like my guidance in continuing, or that you are particularly interested in following, of course I am happy to oblige.
