About

Dylan Wilson is a multi-faceted trumpeter in the St. Louis / Southern Illinois area. Dylan is currently Active Duty military in the United States Air Force. He is stationed at Scott AFB and is a member of the USAF Band of Mid-America (BoMA). He tours frequently with the BoMA Concert Band, Shades of Blue Jazz Ensemble, and the Airlifter Brass Quintet. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 2023 where he was a student of Dr. Karl Sievers, the principal trumpet of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic as well as professor of jazz studies, Jay Wilkinson.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is centered around developing the students own mental image of their sound. To this extent, I create a unique routine of fundamentals for each student to target the issues that are keeping the students from making the great sound inside of their head.

A typical lesson will begin with these aforementioned fundamentals followed by the music that the student is currently working on for school or auditions.

I will also expect the student to do a lot of listening of great trumpet players. I will give the student suggestions as to who I would like them to listen to for mini-assignments and we will discuss it in their following lessons.

Curriculum

Since my teaching primarily focuses on the development of great trumpet fundamentals, there will be a couple of notable books that students should acquire. These books are as follows: Arban's Method for the Trumpet, Schlossberg's Lip Flexibilities, Clarke's Technical Studies for the Cornet, as well as Vincent Cichowiz's Flow Studies.
