Andrew Son
About
Andrew is a Canadian concert pianist who has competed and toured across Canada. He has won numerous prestigious awards, including 1st Prize at the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals' National Piano Competition, 1st Prize at the Atlantic Young Artist Competition, and the Debut Atlantic Prize for Musical Excellence.
In addition to his solo concert career, he has collaborated with internationally acclaimed artists, such as Denise Djokic and Stephane Theriault, and conductors such as Bernhard Gueller, Dinuk Wijeratne, and Peter Allen. He has performed with orchestras, such as Symphony Nova Scotia, Nova Sinfonia, Dalhousie Symphony Orchestra, and the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra, performing concertos such as Beethoven Piano Concertos 1 and 3, Liszt Piano Concerto 1, and Prokofiev Piano Concerto 1. He has had the privilege to perform for and receive a masterclass from the great Martha Argerich in 2017 at the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance.
Along with his performance career, he has also taught piano lessons since 2017, to very young students and also to mature, adult students, too. From receiving many years of private tutelage from his piano mentors, he has taken all of his lessons that he has learned to his own lesson room for his students. And ultimately, he believes in keeping music fun for all!
Teaching Style
My methodology in terms of how I teach is solely based on what your musical goals and aspirations are. If you are a student who's goal may be to prepare for a piano exam or competition, I can definitely guide you step-by-step in terms of how to best put forth a plan and how to execute the plan. You may be someone who wants to learn a piano piece to perform at an event (such as a wedding); I can certainly guide you on how to best prepare for that, too. All in all, I set my lesson plans based on what my student's desires are, and I aim to exceed their expectations by providing individually catered feedback but also by creating a safe and fun environment to learn piano!
