Jack Tinney
About
Jack Tinney is a dedicated 25 year-old classical pianist with a fun and holistic approach to teaching. Jack started learning piano when he was nine. Jack is currently completing a mentorship program with concert pianist Aaron Pilsan in Berlin. He received degrees in Psychology and Music from the University of Washington in Seattle where he performed regular recitals. He also studied for two years under professional jazz pianist and phenomenal teacher Scotty Bemis in Seattle. Jack is currently traveling, pursuing music and teaching full time.
Jack's primary musical passion lies in the genre of classical music - especially the works of J.S. Bach. He is also well versed in jazz, pop, playing by ear, music theory, and is obsessed with teaching and making learning fun.
Teaching Style
Starting from the first lesson, Jack's primary goal as a teacher is to help students play the music they love.
For those new to the piano, Jack helps students acquire the fundamentals in a way that is fun and engaging. But as early as the first lesson, Jack isn't afraid to get 'outside the book' and get students playing a simple version of a song they love as quickly as possible. He believes that in the beginning, fun is a critical ingredient for success.
For a student who is more developed, Jack helps with setting goals, developing healthy practice habits, building repertoire, and learning the technique and theory necessary for success in music. While Jack's own experience as a piano student is supported by teachers who were rigorous and demanding, Jack aims to make his lessons fun and approachable. For Jack, it is the curiosity of the student that that provides the best guidance for both teacher and student. Although Jack came from a more traditional and strict musical world, he later on learned the importance of flexibility, and that there is never one path to follow in learning music.
