Adam Duncan
About
Passionate and experienced piano and music theory teacher based in Knutsford, Cheshire, UK. I teach people of all ages and abilities, from beginner through to Grade VIII. Available for in person or online lessons. Graduated from the University of Leeds in 2008 with a 2:1 BA (Hons) in Music - specialising in performance and composition and have achieved ABRSM Grade VIII Piano, Violin and Music Theory.
Teaching experience has included teaching in New Zealand for a year in 2005, where I taught instrumental, theory and classroom music at Marlborough Boys' College in Blenheim.
Whilst teaching for numerous years, I have also been a keen composer, writing for short-films and commissioned to write a work for the Viola da Gamba, performed live on BBC Radio 3.
Through my teaching, performance and composition, I'm a well-rounded musician and look to bring that to my piano and theory teaching.
Teaching Style
I have a flexible and fun approach to teaching. Learning the piano or music theory, especially at an early age or stage needs to be enjoyable. I adapt to what the student wants to achieve, whether that's to just be able to play for fun, or to work through their grades. I ensure that all areas of musicianship are developed when learning the piano, and so in addition to learning to play the piano, the student develops music reading, theory, aural and musicianship skills at the same time, so that they develop as a well-rounded musician, as well as an accomplished pianist.
Curriculum
My teaching method is thorough, ensuring that no bad habits are developed during the early stages. I focus on breaking down the information provided on the page of a piece of music, to break it all down so that it doesn't seem too overwhelming to the beginner. Learning to read music and playing the piano is difficult at the beginning, and so my approach to breaking it all down in to rhythm, note-reading, melody, dynamics, musical instruction etc., ensures that the student develops well and quickly (practice dependent!).
For beginners, my recommended books are:
Adult beginners - John Thompson's Adult Piano Course Book 1
Beginners aged 6+ - Piano Time 1 by Pauline Hall
Beginners aged 5 and under - John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course Book 1
