Dana Wenzel
About
My name is Dana! I am very passionate about music, and I teach online lessons that are perfect for busy families. I've played the violin for 20 years and recently received my Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Victoria, and I'm currently working towards my Suzuki Violin Teacher certifications.
I've had some incredible teachers in my career. During my Bachelor's degree I had the pleasure of studying under the Lafayette String Quartet, Canada's premiere string quartet, and I've also studied under Sarah Pizzichemi of Skyros Quartet, and Jan Coleman. In addition to my own education, I'm honored to be part of a lineage of violinists that can be directly traced to Shinichi Suzuki, Ivan Galamian, Nathan Milstein, and many other truly incredible musicians and educators.
In addition to teaching, I also perform semi-regularly, and I engage with thousands of people over social media to discuss and educate about classical music.
Teaching Style
There are many benefits to online lessons! There's no commute time involved, children can learn in the comfort of their own homes, and they gain communication skills. I also find that online lessons are extremely organized -- each student has their own personal Google Drive folder for all of their lesson files, and payment is automatically charged at the start of every month. (And of course... if the lessons are online, students can't forget their music at home! )
Although music lessons are traditionally taught in person, I have years of experience teaching online, so I'm able to bridge the gap with descriptive language and inventive exercises to make sure that students never feel like they're missing out.
In addition to violin technique, my students also learn music history, composition, theory, and much more.
Curriculum
Beginner violinists will need Suzuki Violin Book 1, Music by Black Composers volume 1, and I Can Read Music volume 1. If you are not a beginner, I will assess your skills and past experience, and tell you what books to purchase.
