About

Marco William Duranti has been described as “a versatile musician, a classical guitarist who likes to look outside his window”. The gift of composition has led him to seek ideas outside the normal parameters of the classical guitar. His principal aim has always been to create new compositions for the classical guitar, rather than adaptations of music from other instruments or sources.   He says “I like to implement and adapt ideas from the outside, mould them and make them a property of the guitar, rather than make the guitar a property of the transcription".

At the same time, Duranti turns this idea on its head by taking ideas that come from the guitar and adapting them to other musical contexts.  This is frequently his method in composing film scores or rock music. This approach comes from his early learning and family roots: his family were artist-artisans and had, as friends, opera, rock and classical musicians, painters and sculptors.  He has an enduring love of 60's and 70's music of various styles, including the most beautiful period of classical music recordings.

Duranti says he does not seek originality in music, but believes in the uniqueness of a composition stemming from many factors, including the character and ability of the performer.

Duranti’s ideas are underpinned by a solid practical and theoretical education: he describes a “progressive and passionate study of music theory and the guitar” at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto under John Perrone and later in Rome under Mario Gangi.  As a schoolboy, he also learned to play the blues from a street musician, giving him another perspective on the guitar.

Duranti’s music career has suffered challenges and interruptions which have obliged him to explore new directions.  He has made many original recordings, ranging from classical guitar to rock concept albums, and film music. He performed extensively in Italy for many years.  Duranti says “this long journey is not over yet - I hope I will be able to produce more works and hopefully leave something worth mentioning!”

Teaching Style

I have been happily teaching the guitar for over 35 years in different countries with different mentalities, customs, cultures and approach to things, but nevertheless one thing links them all: the love for music in all its aspects. As a musician I find that this beautifully represents the real international language that is able to bring together all souls and brings them to the higher level of conscience in the most natural and delightful way. I am a great teacher when I have a great student! In other words the more a student wants to learn the more I give, remember that the student sets the pace and is his real own teacher and the teacher is a manager, the advisor and coach. When this formula works well incredible results can be achieved. I am very easy going and patient, I have lots and lots of teaching experience and a well set method that is aimed at giving maximum results in the shortest time possible. I usually accept students that want to learn acoustic and classical guitar, a large range from blues and rock to the most sophisticated classical music that tops it all! Often many of my students do both, as much more than meets the eye can be learned and used in whatever future project an ambitious student may have or just for fun.

You can contact me for further details, I usually offer a free consultation where a proper teaching program assessment can be made as well.

Curriculum

Like I mentioned above, as a teacher I am very versatile, this is linked to my personal experience both for the training I received and for my personal experience as a musician. My teaching style is usually very accommodating. I like to make my students feel comfortable with me so that they can learn with ease and enjoy what they are doing. Lessons must be fun, entertaining and useful.  As mentioned I am very versatile and can cover most styles of music. There is a basic logic in music that once it is understood, it opens many doors. Also I always encourage and slowly bring students to understand that playing an instrument means two things. The first is learning the technical aspect of the instrument 50% and second is interpretation 50%.

Credentials & Affiliations

My musical education began when I was 16 under the careful guidance of guitarist/composer/performer John Perrone at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto (Canada). Years later on I studied in Rome (Italy) with guitarist/composer/performer Mario Gangi. I also attended various master classes mainly in Italy, but also some in Canada.

Through the years I have been constantly collaborating with other classical guitarist like Italo Oliva Tamburello, developing new techniques and approaches in order to solve what are common issues especially linked to the classical guitar. Also special lessons for those students that have suffered from Focal Dystonia like Italo and myself in the past.

As a composer I have written many pieces ranging from classical guitar to rock music and film scores. Some of the pieces are in the process of being published while many are presently available through Bergman Edition as well as ArrangeMe (Hal Leonard Company).

I recorded several works (CD’s). With the progressive rock band Exogen (Mind Directions, Unconditional, Ajar). With Exogen I was also the main vocalist. I recorded film works in collaboration with Mirko Speranzi, that are collected in the CD “Notte negli Occhi”.

For solo classical guitar I recorded “Classical Guitar” and “Preludes of Rome” which will be released soon. I will be recording some new works entitled Nocturnes in the near future.

Some of my works are being performed by others like classical/flamenco guitarist Michele Manuguerra and Nicolo’ Neri.

I have toured Italy with Exogen and performed in Concerts both as soloist guitarist and ensemble in UK, Italy and Canada.

I am often invited as a guest by Luigi Picardi “L’Arpeggio” at Vatican Radio in Rome (Italy) to present my works and like mentioned above to discuss technical issues in regards to the classical guitar.

Besides teaching privately, I have also taught at:

The Toronto Faculty of Music (Canada), Istituto Fosso Ombroni in Arezzo (Italy) and presently

I am teaching guitar and piano at the Southampton Arts Academy.
