About

Michael is a Musicologist, Flute Educator/Performer, Content Creator, Music Theory Teacher, Contemporary Pianist, Music Composer/Arranger, Stage Manager, Music Conductor/Director and the founder of The Ottimo Community Orchestra. And  has acquired a Barchelor of Arts (B.A) in Music, with flute performance as my major.

With over 10 years of active flute and music teaching, I have been able to teach and impact the lives of beginners and intermediate music enthusiasts of varying age, class and nationality in flute playing/performance, basic piano playing, music theory, basic sight-reading skills, and more, with many of my previous students rising up to embrace music as a career and others, as performers and teachers today.

My experience these many years has aided to shape the various pedagogical methods that I apply to meet individual student's needs, learning ability and assimilation capacity. This foresters the success I record from each class meeting as I do not only teach, but understands each of my student and adopts the best teaching strategy for each student's ability.

My desire for transmitting good knowledge and my passion for performing at a high standard, led to the foundation of The Ottimo Community Orchestra; A young, yet promising orchestra whose aim is to teach and groom music enthusiasts and to reproduce music in it most elegant state.

Michael has and keeps performing at various concerts and platforms including; The Ottimo Community Ochestra, The University of Ibadan Orchestra, The Trinity Choral and Orchestra Group, The Saint Cecilia Orchestra, VIAJE MUSICAL with Temitope Aina, BEL CANTO with Gloria Nwoke, The Dionysus Assembly, for Social Media (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok as a content creator) and continues to share my music knowledge with students because I believe 'Teaching Is Learning'.

Teaching Style

My well-structured programs on flute and basic music theory/sight reading aims at producing optimum results from each meeting taking you from the place of the known to the place of the unknown, evoking the willingness to know more and an anticipation for our next meeting.

Here is a breakdown of a typical first class with you

For Novice Only on flute;

I introduce the instrument to them, showing;

1. Body posture for flute playing,

2. How to hold the flute,

3. Your first sound on the flute and

4. Finger numbering for the flute.

For Intermediates On Flute;

1. I have you play your scales and various arpeggios,

2. I further check your skill level making you play one or two short excerpts or songs of your choice,

3. I check your ability to hear and produce what you will hear me play as this is good for contemporary music playing.

4. Lastly, I check for their sight-reading capacity and speed.

After this check is done, and then curate a personalized class program that suits the skill level of the student for the student.

Curriculum

One important step to providing students with the right methods is 'finding out what they already know'. This helps me see through their previous music lessons (for those who had had previous music lessons), and provides a yardstick for the selection of a method for them.

Some of my methods and recommended student texts includes;

For Classical Flute:

 1. A tune a day for flute (for beginners)

2. Taffanel and Gaubert handbook ( beginners and intermediate)

3. Marcel Moylse De la Sonorite

4. Developing artistry via thoughtful practice ( a method book for intermediate flutist) and more.

5. Orchestra excerpts and pieces

6. Finger dexterity workout (my book)

7. The finger gym exercises (my book)

For Contemporary Flute;

1. Beginning band book part 1. ( for novices)

2. Hal Cook; Ready, Aim, Improvise (for jazz flute)

3. Jazz Handbook by Jamey Aebersold.

4. Etudes and more.
