About

Hi, I’m Derrick Raiter, a professional percussionist with over 30 years of experience. I help drummers and percussionists of all levels build strong technique, confidence, groove, and musical expression through personalized, engaging lessons. My teaching is shaped by a national performance career and seven years of private study with renowned drummer Anika Nilles.

As LessonFace Teacher of the Year 2025 for Percussion & Marimba, my teaching draws from extensive professional performance experience across Symphonic, Jazz, Rock, Drum Corps, Metal, and World styles. This background, combined with focused study in modern drumming concepts, gives students practical insights into timing, feel, structure, and musicianship that translate directly into real results.

I hold a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance and continue to grow through workshops, seminars, and collaboration with musicians around the world. My experience in recording studios, live performance, and education allows me to tailor lessons to each student’s goals – whether that’s building stronger fundamentals, improving time and feel, preparing for auditions, or developing musical creativity.

I work with beginners building solid foundations, intermediate players refining timing, feel, and reading, and advanced students preparing for auditions, scholarships, recording, and performance opportunities on drum set and percussion. Lessons are structured yet flexible, combining technical development, musical understanding, and personalized goals so students see consistent progress.

With reliable high-speed fiber-optic internet, lessons run seamlessly from Portugal to students worldwide, including across the U.S. My focus is always on connection, clarity, and creating an encouraging, motivating learning environment.

To help get you started, I offer a free trial lesson and a discounted New Student Package – 10 lessons at $28.50 per 30-minute lesson (normally $38). It’s a great way to meet, explore your goals, and begin building momentum with confidence. I look forward to meeting you soon!

Teaching Style

As your teacher, I work as both a dedicated percussion coach and a supportive mentor. Depending on a student’s goals, lessons may include groove and feel development, technique and coordination exercises, playing with songs, creative fill concepts, metronome work, and real-world musical application. My goal is to help you build strong fundamentals, confidence, and musical independence while staying motivated and excited about learning.

I enjoy teaching students of all ages and levels, from beginners taking their first steps to advanced players refining technique and preparing for auditions or performances. Lessons are fully personalized to each student’s age, experience, learning style, and musical goals. We focus on essential skills such as technique, timing, reading, theory, ear training, and musical understanding, always applying concepts directly to music you enjoy. Whether you’re studying drum set, orchestral percussion, hand drums, or marching percussion, lessons are structured yet flexible, so progress feels clear and achievable.

I believe learning percussion should be engaging, creative, and fun. I bring positivity, energy, and encouragement to every lesson, while also challenging students to think critically and creatively. I often teach concepts in multiple ways to help ideas click, build deeper understanding, and develop problem-solving skills that extend beyond music.

For students preparing for auditions, competitions, recordings, or live performances, lessons emphasize consistency, confidence, and musical presence. Becoming a strong musician takes work, but you won’t do it alone – I’m here to guide, support, and help you stay focused on steady improvement.

Let’s build skills that last and unlock your full musical potential together!

Curriculum

My teaching method is structured, adaptable, and results-focused, built on over 30 years of professional performance, recording, and teaching experience. Every lesson follows a clear plan while remaining flexible enough to adapt to each student’s goals, learning style, and pace of progress. Students always understand what they’re working on, why it matters, and how it connects to real music.

Lessons may include a combination of technique development, coordination and speed-building exercises, groove and feel work, reading and interpretation, metronome training, creative application, and playing with recordings. I regularly use listening, imitation, trading patterns or fills, and playing together to strengthen musical awareness, timing, and confidence.

Concepts are always applied directly to music so students develop understanding, not just repetition. Depending on the student’s instrument and level, I draw from widely respected method books such as Mark Wessels’ A Fresh Approach series, Peter Erskine’s Drum Concepts and Techniques, Anthony J. Cirone’s Portraits in Rhythm, and Tommy Igoe’s Groove Essentials, alongside a large collection of original exercises, worksheets, and supplemental materials I’ve developed over many years of teaching. These materials allow me to address specific technical challenges, clarify complex concepts, and help students practice more efficiently. For many students, this customized approach accelerates progress far beyond a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Lessons may also explore topics such as rhythmic interpretation, subdivision and grouping, improvisation, form awareness, stylistic vocabulary, and effective practice strategies. Rather than memorizing isolated grooves or exercises, students learn transferable skills that support long-term musical independence, creativity, and versatility.

Lessons are taught online via Zoom using high-quality audio and video and are suitable for students of all ages and levels. To help you get started, I offer a free trial lesson – a relaxed way to meet, discuss goals, and experience how lessons are structured before committing.
