About
Soul Science Lab is a music and multimedia duo powered by Chen Lo and Asante Amin. The two are storytellers who inspire the future. SSL is dedicated to creating a celebrated body of work and cultivating the next generation of iconic artists. The duo’s current projects include Soundtrack ’63, Make a Joyful Noize (commissioned by Carnegie Hall), and The Renaissance Mixtape (commissioned by the Apollo Theater). SSL has released three studio albums: Footprints, The Visitor: Alter Destiny, and Plan for Paradise. SSL has also developed an education platform for music creatives and educators called Soul Science University—just call them innovative Afro-futuristic Griots. Their work has garnered various grants and awards including The Bryan Gallace/Posthumous Prodigy Fellowship.
Chen Lo
Chen is a multi-talented artist, songwriter and educator. He has toured performing and conducting workshops and master classes in Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria,Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Bahrain, Honduras, Ireland, South Africa,Swaziland, Senegal, Vietnam and Brazil. Through his music and multi-media production company, Soul Science Lab (SSL), he released a series of album projects, and performed or produced work with premier arts institutions like Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, The Apollo Theater, Harlem Stage, Brooklyn Academy of Music, MassMoCA and the Classical Theater of Harlem.
As an experienced arts educator he has developed and implemented arts education curricula nationally and globally. He served as the head of music production for the Academy at Urban Arts Partnership and the musical director for FreshEd, a music integrated academic program for English and Social Studies. He is the co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of CodeScty, a startup that uses hip hop to teach computer science concepts.With SSL he launched a culturally responsive education platform for music creatives and educators called Soul Science University.
He is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor in Voice at the Roc Nation School of Music, LongIsland University, Brooklyn. Chen holds a Bachelors of Arts from Penn State in Media Studies and an interdisciplinary Masters from New York University in Music Business, Music Tech, Art and Social Change.
Asante Amin
Asante Amin, a seasoned multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator, boasts over 15 years of experience as a music educator and 25 years as a professional musician. He’s led music education programs in schools and community organizations both domestically and globally, blending historical and cultural elements into his teaching of technical musical skill sets. Notably, he has collaborated with esteemed organizations such as Urban Arts Partnership, Family Dynamics, and the Quest Youth Organization to deliver impactful music theory and band programs.
In addition to his role as an educator, Amin co-founded Soul Science Lab in Brooklyn, NY, where music, culture, and technology converge. SSL has produced groundbreaking works like Soundtrack 63, The Renaissance Mixtape and Make A Joyful Noize, as the result of commissions from prestigious institutions like The Apollo Theater and Carnegie Hall. Amin also serves as the Music Director and a founding member of CodeScty, an interactive learning initiative that utilizes original Hip-Hop music to teach computational thinking and computer science concepts to students in grades 6-12. His innovative contributions earned him the MetLife Meet the Composer award, The Young Lion Award among many others.
