Hello! My name is Steph and I can't wait to hear you play! I will absolutely enjoy teaching you regardless of your age or playing ability.
Beginner students: We will mostly work on pieces out of Kathy Blocki's flute method books as well as exercises composed by myself to make sure your fundamentals are solid from the beginning. Plan on learning new notes and rhythms each lesson as well as having scale and playing assignments.
Intermediate students: We will be working on honing the fundamentals (tone, technique, articulation) through various etudes and intermediate solo pieces, depending on playing ability. Vibrato will be introduced as well as phrasing, breathing, and everyone's favorite: intonation! Weekly assignments will include memorizing scales and preparing all pieces covered in lessons. Prepare to take notes and laugh frequently at my jokes!
Advanced students: We will learn about body awareness and work on playing without tension. We will work on developing tone colors (warm, sweet, bright, hollow, etc.), refining your technique through daily exercises, as well as further developing the fundamentals. We will work on repertoire for your auditions, more advanced solo pieces, etudes, and technical exercises. Weekly assignments will include practicing at least 45 minutes per day to have material fully prepared for the lesson.
Always remember: The more effort you put into your lessons, the more you will get out of them. Most of your growth as a musician will happen while you are practicing. If you come to lessons fully prepared, we can learn new material each week and continuously hone your skills. You will also make me a very happy teacher. :)

I've been very impressed with this system. This is our second flute teacher to use and both have been great. Steph is kind, thoughtful, and very responsive!
My first time picking up a flute, and I had a very specific request... Steph was awesome, made it fun, left with tools to practice and I can't wait to have another session to share my progress!
Very good ! We will continue to work with Steph.
My daughter had a really positive first lesson online with Steph. She was able to determin her level and has set her suitable prep for next class. My daughter is happy !
My daughter has attended one lesson so far and she said - "I JUST LOVED IT!! She is making flute fun again! I can tell she is going to push me too, Mom"
great teacher, gives great tips on how to improve your playing
Steph is patient and kind. Super knowledgeable and thorough. Very glad that I started lessons with her.
Amazing with our middle school child! She has been our child’s teacher for over a year. Patient, friendly, makes it fun, and she’s responsible and on the ball with any scheduling updates. Blessed to have found her!
Almost 3 years of great classes now. Steph is on the East Coast and I'm on the West Coast. Am learning Bach, Haydn, Telemann and more. I couldn't be musically happier.
Bye! See you next week!!!!
she's super nice and supportive and she's just a really cool person in general 10\10 and she's really helped me with the flute
I play alto sax and piano, mostly jazz. I owned a flute for over 20 years, but struggled to learn how to play it. Took a few lessons over the years, but felt discouraged and stopped within couple of lessons. When COVID started, I thought this is a great opportunity to learn flute online and within a few weeks with Steph I was playing complex music. After six months of lessons I feel comfortable to play flute live with other musicians and am loving it. Steph is an amazing teacher: encouraging, insightful, open and challenges me to play more and more complex music and get comfortable on the flute. I love playing the flute and am very grateful for Steph lessons.
great first lesson!
Steph is a great flute teacher! My 11 year old is learning a lot and enjoys getting to know Steph. Steph has made the effort to get to know her student personally and has built a genuine relationship.
Steph was great!! She was encouraging and corrective, and I am so excited to practice! She gave me all the materials I need to do so, and I feel like it’s just the right amount of areas to focus on and improve from now until my next lesson. I already see improvement and I’m looking forward to continuing.
I play alto saxophone for 25 years, but never managed to play flute. I took a few lessons over the years in person with two teachers, but couldn't play more than more than one octave with decent sound. In just a few weeks of online lessons with Steph I advanced enough to be able to play 2.5 octaves with decent technic and tone. She is a wonderful, joyful and supportive teacher that challenges me to exercise and play beautiful music in a way that is both clear and fun.
She is such a great teacher!
My daughter really enjoyed her first class. Thank you!
Steph is great! She is full of encouragement and support. My daughter learned so much after just one lesson and she’s excited about the flute again!

Student, Janvi has never done anything like this before, the teacher, Steph made her comfortable and gave her a first class lesson. My two children (adults now) both played several instruments and I have experienced several different teachers thru the years. Music is so wonderful, glad we found Steph.

My son is enjoying lessons with Steph!
My son liked the online class. It is convenient and flexible on location and time. Steph gave him plenty home work each week to keep him motivated. He started to practice daily since he started the class and I am happy to see that he is on track.
I am learning at a pace I am comfortable with which is nice.
I really appreciate Steph's patience. Thanks.
Steph and I studied flute with the same professor in Undergrad and I can tell you she is a fantastic musician! We only had a few opportunities to play together but each duet opportunity was amazing an enjoyable she is easy going and very disiplinced. She is a fantastic performer and I am sure she will give her all to help you grow from whatever your current playing level may be! Take lessons with Steph!!
she is so kind
Steph was great. It was my first flute lesson ever. I’m looking forward to next lesson.
I really enjoy learning from Steph -- she shares the best tips and tricks to help me as an adult learner. She makes lessons together fun and has a very laid back disposition. It's a perfect fit for my "no pressure" desire to learn to read music and play an instrument after nearly 40 years. I love the way she approaches teaching, sharing her passion, and assigns just the right dose of homework. I highly recommend her to help you enjoy playing a musical instrument!
she is a really good teacher who teaches perfectly at my pace and makes sure i know the song before moving on.
:D

Loved it. A lot of fun.
Incredibly helpful on understanding the physical mechanics of tone production.
I get so much out of every session I have with Steph. She has a lot of knowledge and provides many useful tools for approaching challenging techniques. It's easy to see that she's used to working with students at all levels.

Smart, flexible, clear, adept at working online and a very accessible teacher. Steph is a wonderful instructor for the novice.
Steph was very friendly and helped my daughter improve her tone and pitch in just her first lesson. She's very excited for their next session!
I had Stephanie as a tutor in music theory all the way through my theory classes in college, and she is a great help. She is very friendly and extremely patient, and helped me come out of my shell and feel comfortable in my theory classes. I cannot stress enough what a wonderful bright person she is, and how great she is at what she does! She is an extremely intelligent and qualified instructor, as well as being a brilliant flutist.
I have been playing different instruments and singing since I was little, and I finally wanted to take a crack at the flute! Steph is a WONDERFUL teacher, she is dedicated and kind. She can found techniques that work for me and my tone improved a lot. I learned a lot from her and I have found a new hobbie. She is also a very good theory teacher and is good at explaining the concepts. I would recommend her to anyone!
Stephanie is an amazing flute teacher. I have some music experience, but I could never seem to get a single sound out of the flute. Steph found methods that worked for me and helped me learn how to finally make a sound! She is patient, encouraging, and really made me feel like my progress on the flute was important to her. I completely recommend her to anyone of any level.

Teaching Style
My teaching philosophy is rooted in kindness, compassion, and self-awareness. I believe that fostering a supportive learning environment is essential for musical growth. I aim to empower my students with tools and resources for every aspect of flute performance so that over time, they are able to identify and address their own playing challenges independently. I see myself not just as an instructor but as a guide, assisting students in developing the self-awareness necessary to become their own teachers. My ultimate goal is to instill a sense of curiosity and self-discovery in every student, enabling them to navigate their musical journey with confidence and resilience, cultivating a lifelong love for music and learning in the process.
