Jack Fanning has been teaching the bassoon since 2015. Jack is the principal bassoonist of the Carolina Philharmonic, second bassoonist with North Carolina Opera, and he freelances regularly with orchestras all over the east coast. He is currently a Doctor of Musical Arts student at UNC Greensboro, studying bassoon with Dr. Michael Burns and teaching theory and aural skills. Jack is an accomplished bassoon reed maker and makes his reeds available to purchase for his students. The importance of a good reed to a young bassoonist is paramount; it is key to making great music and being successful from day to day.
Jack earned a Bachelor of Music in Bassoon Performance at CSU Sacramento where he studied with Dr. David Wells. He then went onto earn his Masters of Music in Bassoon Performance at UNC Greensboro where he studied with Dr. Michael Burns. The tutelage of these great bassoonists fostered a love of music performance and education and sharing the passion of bassoon playing with younger students. Jack also holds a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Music Theory from UNC Greensboro. His training specifically focused on pedagogy of music theory and the study of current trends in music theory.

Jack is an incredibly experienced and thoughtful teacher, who combines great skill with humor, kindness and understanding. I had almost stopped playing entirely during Covid, and Jack provided the expertise and encouragement to help me start playing again and make great strides. I was incredibly fortunate to have him as.a teacher and I recommend him highly!
Our son has been studying with Jack for about a year and he is FANTASTIC. Super patient, works at the level that is right for our kid, does great teaching over zoom. Our's son's musicality has really improved, and he's playing pieces for Jack's lessons that are more challenging than what he gets in band. Once the younger kids are ready for classes we'll be tempted to have them learn with Jack too, even though they are on different instruments, just because it's been such a great fit. This was a great find for music lessons during the pandemic, but it's turned out to be so convenient we're sticking with on-line lessons!
Jack was immediately very engaging and a knowledgeable teacher . He was able to make a great connection and my children already feels more confident. It was wonderful to see someone understand what my child needed and they are feeling enthusiastic about bassoon again.
My 14 year old son is so impressed and appreciative of Jack and is learning a lot from him. Jack's style and approach is engaging and motivating. He's only 3 lessons in and has asked to continue "as long as possible"! We'd say Jack is a gem.
First lesson today for my daughter. He was very patient with her. He took everything slow, since she has never played any musical instrument. She is now excited to practice and learn more!
Going very well, happy with progress!
Great teacher, very knowledgeable, smart, kind and very helpful. My son has loved doing bassoon lessons with Jack and it has helped my son tremendously! Thanks so much!
My son has been taking lessons with Jack for close to 2 months and absolutely loves his lessons. He really enjoys learning from Jack. Jack's a great communicator and keeps me informed of my sons progress (which I can hear as well). Thanks Jack!
Today was my son's first Bassoon lesson with Jack, and he was thrilled with it! He hasn't stopped talking about how great a teacher he was. We have had a few others that just didn't hit the mark, but Jack surpassed it! I can not believe how much my son learned in one 45 min session! We are thrilled and can not wait to continue with him!
great
First lesson with Jack and my some is really happy!
Very nice!
Our daughter was amazed and in "Ah" with all she learned in just her first lesson with Jack. It was fantastic to see her excitement again for private lessons. So excited she wanted to continue playing and practicing even after the session. Thank you, Jack! She wanted me to let you know she is looking forward to many more days like this!😁👍
Jack is a friendly, encouraging instructor---a great match for my 11-year-old daughter. He's obviously an expert bassoonist, but does a fantastic job of explaining things clearly and simply for the less-advanced student. My daughter can't wait for her next bassoon lesson with Jack!
Very knowledgeable and friendly, and a great communicator about bassoon technique. Today was my daughter’s first lesson with Jack - She learned so much and has some good assignments to work on before the next lesson. We totally recommend Jack as an instructor!
I couldn't be more happy with the bassoon lessons that Jack has with my daughter. The online lessons are so convenient and a great way to work with this fantastic teacher. Jack's teaching style is extremely positive and supportive. He encourages my daughter to push out of her comfort zone and grow as a musician. The progress that she has made with him is incredible. He is very knowledgeable about music and integrates music theory, sight reading, and rhythm studies into their lessons. You can see that he loves playing and teaching the bassoon and that excitement carries over to my daughter. She never wants to put her bassoon down after their lessons! Lessons with Jack have been the best thing we've done to support her playing bassoon.
Jack is an AMAZING bassoon player and FANTASTIC instructor. He has taught my young son for over a year. We audited other music teachers who said they taught bassoon but really only knew the basics of teaching bassoon, their real expertise were other instruments. I was particularly impressed by Jack's ability to relate to my 11 year old son. He makes learning the bassoon not only informative but engaging and fun. Jack not only teaches classical bassoon music but is open to teaching modern pieces that my son wanted to learn. (I mean, how cool is it that my 11 year old kid busts out the Star Wars Cantina Song on his bassoon.) Jack plays bassoon regularly with orchestras which gives him real world experience that he passes on to his students. When I have seen him play professionally, it amazed me that someone so young could show such majority and skill with his musical instrument. Jack is also a great problem solver. When my son has problems with a piece, Jack is able to hear the problem and give my son techniques on how to fix them. When my son had problems with the instrument itself or the double reed, Jack was able to show my son HOW to fix them and not just fix it for my son himself. I highly recommend Jack has an instructor for students both young and old.
My daughter has been taking lessons from Jack since August 2017. Along with helping a student with performance, he educates the student on bassoon history and the unique qualities of the bassoon. He is great at starting at the student's level, but will challenging the student in subtle ways. At times he can be very entertaining. He shows his mastery of the bassoon (occasionally performing to demonstrate the nuances of a difficult piece of music). My daughter has enjoyed learning from Jack.
