About

Kyle Pearl is a professional cellist and composer who has actively taught cello lessons for the past eight years professionally, and studied cello performance and music theory and the Frost School of Music. He greatly enjoys teaching, and generally work best with late middle and high school students. He is extremely experienced in audition, competition, and performance preparation.

In the past, he has had students get into highly acclaimed youth orchestras (including Midwest Young Artists Conservatory), compete in chamber music competitions (including Rembrandt Chamber Musicians Annual High School Chamber Music Competition), and win concerto competitions (including the Racine Symphony Young Artists' Competition.

Recently, he has been reviewed by the South Florida Classical Review for his performance with Ensemble Ibis, the review stating, "Pearl’s performance was expert—he didn’t just manage the technique but played the music through one long line of gripping and beautiful expression."

I’m a fellow student at the Frost School of Music. Kyle is a fantastic cellist, and while I don’t have any direct experience with his teaching, he’s been a joy to work with in an ensemble setting, and I can imagine he would be the same as a teacher too.

Teaching Style

I strive to meet my students where they are and take them where they want to go. Whether your goal is to stay active in retirement or be prepared for college auditions I will tailor the lessons to your needs.

Curriculum

My curriculum varies widely depending on the level of the student.

For beginners, I start by establishing the bow hold playing open strings. Once the student can play open strings, we will add the left hand and learn a few major scales. After scales become proficient, we will work on music reading and begin playing some simple songs such as Hot Cross Buns and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. This process takes about 3 lessons.

For intermediate students, about 2-5 years of playing, I break the lesson down into three categories. The first is scales and exercises. In this category, we will learn 2 and 3 octave scales in all 12 major and minor keys, as well as a variety of technique exercises tailored to the students needs. The second category is study pieces or etudes. These are short pieces of music that might only take a week or two to master. Each one focuses on a specific area of technique to help the student improve. The third and largest category is repertoire or performance pieces. This part of the lesson is completely driven by the student. Whatever music you’re interested in we can learn together; I currently have students learning everything from Bach to The Beetles. The first two categories will be shaped to support your choice of repertoire.

For advanced students, 5+ years of experience, the lesson experience becomes very individual. Some of my pupils in this category prefer to follow the three groups for intermediate players, while others use the lesson as an opportunity to workshop music they already know and build their proficiency. At this level, I offer guidance about repertoire choices, how to pursue music further as either an amateur or professional, and high-level performance coaching.

In summary, my curriculum depends on the student and will always match what’s best for them.
