About
I help students who need help due to the struggles they go through with their instruments. I love teaching private lessons because I believe in spreading the word to make the great gift of playing music available to many. I started teaching with the company Take Lessons in August 2011. I've enjoyed every day of it. I have 97 reviews in my profile. The company will be gone in November. I also teach elementary music at a Las Vegas school for the Clark County School District. My school is called Mountain View Elementary School. I started with the school district here in 2006. Me and my family came here from Ohio where I started teaching school in 1992. I have been an elementary music teacher every year since 1992. I love the challenge of finding ways to become successful at every step of the way. I am influenced by several 20th Century musicians such as Van Cliburn, Oscar Peterson, George Shearing, Erroll Garner, Yudi Menuhin, Issac Stern, Dave Brubeck, and Yo Yo Ma among others.
Teaching Style
I teach according to your individual needs. I help students become successful on piano, violin, cello, viola, upright bass, guitar, classical guitar, bass guitar and music theory. I help students play and read music using my own proven methods. I fill students' voids with activities such as practice techniques, sub-lessons for remediation, and ear training. I guide you toward proper posture, tone development, the the ability to keep a steady beat. I help you develop your musical independence by tweaking lessons, and using alternate approaches to help you succeed. Mastering an instrument is the result of effective instruction and step by step guidance toward foundations and skills. I believe in personalizing your approach to the strangeness of the instrument. Students need to learn much about posture, and proper tone production within the first year. Method books are not "how to" books. Here in Las Vegas I have had several students win auditions into The Las Vegas Youth Orchestra for cello and violin. I have also had two students win acceptance to The Las Vegas School of The Arts. I have no connection to those organizations. I taught those students, they worked, and won their audition. I am listed in the Ninth Edition 2004 "Who's Who Among American Teachers". I have experience teaching both children and adults who have autism within a variety of functioning ranges.
Curriculum
I start string students with Suzuki. Thompson, and Schaum for piano, and The Real Book for jazz instruction along with Frank Mantooth books for jazz harmony. I create my own materials to remediate lessons for student success. My music reading methods for these instruments develop fluent note readers within weeks.
