Jonas Joner
About
Hi! My name is Jonas, I’m 29 years old, and I’ve been playing guitar from the age of six. I started teaching at 14 and have worked with students of all ages, ranging from 6 to 50 years old.
My musical roots lie in (progressive) metal, but my horizons expanded significantly through years of traveling in the Orient. From 2015 to 2019, I hitchhiked across Eurasia, financing my journey primarily through street performances. Immersing myself in Turkish, Persian, and Indian musical traditions, as well as countless jam sessions with people whose languages I didn’t speak, taught me that music is a universal form of communication—free of geographical and artistic boundaries.
After years of traveling and exploration, I returned to Germany at the end of 2019 to prepare for music studies and to record and produce my first solo album. From 2021 to 2024, I studied jazz in Israel, where I led two guitar ensembles and developed new musical dimensions in my course "Guitar Lab."
Whether you're a beginner or an advanced player, I’m here to share my knowledge, help you find your unique voice on the guitar, and explore the infinite possibilities of music together.
Teaching Style
My wish is to equip you with the tools and knowledge you need to discover your own unique sound—focusing primarly on music theory and ear training. Together, we’ll develop your musical intuition so you can express yourself confidently and authentically, whether it’s in songwriting, band rehearsals, or your next jam session. 😊
Key Areas of Focus:
- Scales: Modes, Whole Tone Scale, Altered Scale, and more.
- Jazz Harmony: Functional harmony, substitutions (e.g., SubV), secondary dominants, etc.
- Ear Training: Intervals, triads, 7th chords, solo transcription.
- Rhythm: Articulation, resolution points, odd meters.
- Improvisation: Playing "inside the changes," arpeggios, target and approach notes.
- Composition: Creating tension and release, modulations, reharmonization, and more.
- Guitar Techniques: From shred techniques (sweep picking, alternate picking, two-hand tapping) to flamenco styles (picado, rasgueado, alzapúa).
- And anything else you’d like to explore!
This course is open to musicians of all levels who don’t just want to play music but truly understand it. A curiosity for unique sounds and a willingness to experiment are especially welcome.
Whether you’re into bonfire classics, death metal, or free jazz, my lessons are tailored to your individual needs so you can share your sound with the world! Let’s get started. 🎸
Curriculum
As little "copy and paste" as possible - I'll often guide you through the process of understanding and finding connections on your own. This usually takes more time than just repeating what I do, but it will solodify your understanding logn-term.
Therefore, I usually don't prepare worksheets up front but instead create them on the go, based on where the lessons leads us.
If I do however use premade material, my main sources are:
Peter Fischer - Rock Guitar Secrets
Michael Sagmeister - Jazz Guitar
Frank Sikora - Jazz Harmony

Private teachers from 6 till 14
Studied Jazz at "Internal Compass Institute" from 2021 till 2024
His first EP “where the wind blows”, recorded and released in 2019 during his 1 year residency in Taiwan, is a first attempt to capture the state of being he experienced during his travels. This collection of minimalistic solo guitar pieces was co-produced by Charity Yang, head of the St. Theresa’s Opportunity Center in Taiwan, which is dedicated to improving the life conditions of children and young adults with disabilities. Most of the 1000 units that were printed have been used for the center’s fundraising campaign.
His first full length album “boundless”, released in 2021, was written during the year of his homecoming and reflects his experience of “diversity on a common ground” and his desire to create bridges between opposites.
Full of impressions from his journey, he intended to merge all his newly acquired influences with his roots in metal. The album contains various ethnic instruments such as Oud, Tabla, Djembe and Didgeridoo as well as heavily distorted 7-String guitars and metal riffs. Boundless was entirely self-recorded in his home in Germany.
From 2021 until 2024 he was enrolled in a program for “creative music and music leadership” at the Internal Compass Institute in Mitzpe Ramon, Israel. Here he found a temporary home for his musical endeavors that include the management of the school’s guitar ensemble, the work with his band “Tau Ensemble” and above all, the exchange with a highly creative community of musicians and artists.
