About

I've been teaching piano for over 11 years, helping students achieve their musical goals. Whether you want to learn classical piano, jazz, pop, or a variety of genres, I'm excited to help you master the piano.

I received my Master’s degree in Music Cum Laude from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa, where I also worked as as a music lecturer for undergraduate and graduate students from 2019-2023. I started teaching individual piano lessons in 2013 to students ranging from ages 5 and up. The majority of my students were beginners and were attending elementary schools in the broader Cape Town area. They were looking to take lessons in a kind and fun environment. All of my students who entered UNISA practical piano exams (a local examination body similar to ABRSM), achieved a distinction (80%) or higher.

Besides teaching, I am an active performer. Recently I've participated in the Stellenbosch Chamber Music Festival. I regularly accompany singers and string players, and play piano as a member of my church's worship team.

I love being able to share the joy and love that I have for music with others, and to teach not only the musical skills, but also the appreciation for how music can bring more beauty, joy, and expression into one's life.

Teaching Style

I love teaching students the skills they need to play the music they enjoy. No two students are the same, therefore I tailor each lesson according to the student's goals. My lessons are fun, upbeat, and informative.

For younger students, I've developed many activities and games to keep students engaged and excited. I include ear training exercises, improvisation games, note reading challenges, rhythm games, and composition prompts. Learning piano should be fun for young children and I specialize in helping students improve in exciting new ways.

I help guide students in picking songs they like that are beneficial to their progress, in addition to letting students and parents decide what musical styles and genres they would like to learn. Regardless of whether you enjoy playing Classical, jazz or popular music, all of my students learn scales, note-reading, rhythm, ear training, and phrasing. I believe having a solid foundation in technique will make a student sound great whether they are playing Bach, Bebop, or the Beatles. For all of my lessons, I include detailed notes on what we worked on to guide your practice during the week.

I teach my students to become versatile players who are equally adept at reading sheet music and improvising from a lead sheet. I want my students to feel comfortable with notation and chord symbols to be able to play as a soloist, as a member of a band, an accompanist, and an improviser.
