About

Hello! My name is Michael, a professional violist and dedicated educator. I am passionate about helping students develop their musical voice, refine their technique, and achieve their performance goals through structured and personalized guidance. My approach to mentorship is rooted in a balance of high-level artistry, technical precision, and a supportive learning environment that empowers students to reach their full potential.

With extensive orchestral performance experience in both the United States and Germany, I bring valuable insight into the demands of professional ensemble playing and audition preparation. As a performer, I have engaged with prestigious ensembles in the U.S. such as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the Shreveport Symphony, and held the Principal Viola chair in the Abilene Philharmonic from 2015-2020. Most recently in Germany, I performed in the viola sections of the Mecklenburgische Staatskapelle Schwerin, the Vogtland Philharmonie, the ORSO Philharmonic, the Mittelsächsische Philharmonie in Freiberg, the Clara-Schumann-Philharmoniker in Zwickau, and the Erzgebirgische Philharmonie in Aue. I have also performed on Summer festival stages, including Charleston’s Spoleto Festival USA and most notably, the Castleton Festival, performing under the baton of the late Lorin Maazel for four seasons. Having performed with prestigious orchestras on both sides of the Atlantic, I understand the unique challenges of navigating different orchestral systems and strive to equip students with the skills needed to succeed in competitive performance settings.

Over the past 15 years, I have taught violin and viola students ranging from young beginners to advanced players preparing for auditions and competitions. My students have earned placements in Texas All-State and All-Region orchestras, achieved top scores in UIL competitions, and gained confidence as musicians through structured, goal-oriented instruction. My teaching career evolved into the virtual space in 2020, allowing me to mentor students worldwide, and I have since continued to build an online studio focused on individualized, high-quality instruction.

As a mentor, I take pride in crafting detailed, progressive learning plans tailored to each student’s unique needs, learning style, and aspirations. Whether we are fine-tuning bow technique, refining audition excerpts, or strengthening foundational skills, my goal is to provide clear, actionable guidance that fosters both technical growth and musical expression. Additionally, I emphasize proper posture and injury prevention to ensure students can play with ease and longevity. Above all, I believe in creating a compassionate and motivating learning space where students feel inspired to push their boundaries while gaining confidence in their playing.

I can’t wait to embark on this journey with you—let’s make music together!

Teaching Style

My teaching style blends technical precision with a nurturing, goal-oriented approach that empowers students to grow as confident musicians. I emphasize building a strong technical foundation through scales, etudes, and from there, carefully chosen repertoire relative to the student's level to develop well-rounded musicianship. Drawing from extensive performance experience in both the United States and Germany, I guide students through the intricacies of whatever they may be facing whether it be ensemble playing, audition preparation, or preparing their orchestral music. Whether working with young beginners or advanced players, I am committed to fostering a supportive environment where students can develop their musical voice.

Curriculum

For my beginner students, I recommend using foundational resources like Essential Elements Book 1 and the Suzuki Book Series to build technique and musicality. These materials provide a structured progression, introduce essential skills such as note reading, and stylistic interpretation through carefully curated repertoire. By working through these books, students develop a solid technical base while gaining confidence in their musical expression and overall playing ability.
