About
With over 15 years of experience as a dedicated music educator and director, I have cultivated a diverse career teaching K-12 music, conducting university bands, and providing private instruction in piano and wind instruments. I earned a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education (Music) from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. I pursued graduate studies in Music Education and Music Technology at UNC Greensboro. My career highlights include serving as Rehearsal Assistant Director and Pep Band Director at North Carolina A&T State University. I directed performances at NCAA tournaments, the MEAC, and various community events. I’ve also led elementary music programs, developed online courses, and organized multicultural performances. Recognized for my leadership and commitment, I was named Teacher of the Year at Smith Farm Elementary and have received honors from Tau Beta Sigma and the North Carolina A&T Band Program. I currently work for Guilford County Schools as a band and chorus teacher, continuing to inspire students through comprehensive music education and performance opportunities. I also am currently certified to teach for the state of NC grades K-12 in Music
Teaching Style
1. Student-Centered / Facilitative: setting personal goals, encouraging self-expression, and tailoring lessons to individual needs and interests.
2. Active / Kinesthetic Learning: To engage younger students and reinforce musical concepts through physical activity, include movement-based activities, body percussion, and games.
3. Constructivist Approach: helps students connect prior knowledge and new material (e.g., linking warm-up techniques to challenging repertoire passages).
4. Repetitive & Reflective Practice (Mastery Learning): emphasize repetition with variation, reflection, and refinement to achieve group cohesion and musical excellence.
5. Collaborative / Social Learning: Foster peer-to-peer learning through sectionals, group singing, and ensemble teamwork, encouraging leadership and accountability.
6. Direct Instruction (when needed): Provide clear, structured guidance, especially in early instruction or large-group settings where clarity is key.
