Súle Greg Wilson
About
Hello! I’m Baba Súle Greg Wilson, from Washington, DC--now living in AZ. I’ve been sharing African/Post-African and more--folklore, music, movement, story, craft—for over fifty years. A founding member of the Grammy Award-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, I’ve authored Funky Banjo, Levels One and Two, The Súle System/Drumpath Rhythms, and the award-winning book, The Drummer’s Path: Moving the Spirit with Ritual and Traditional Drumming. I also have decades of teaching experience: K-university, weekend workshops, groups, one-on-one, and online. I know this: if it ain’t fun, you ain’t gonna keep at it. Also: if it ain’t a challenge, it ain’t gonna stick. Let’s go!
Teaching Style
Let me know where you want to go; that’s the best way we get there. When I learn I like to know the Big Picture, so I share that with students as we move forward--demos, and repetitions, and listening. Coming from oral tradition, I sing and share, explain and example…and give handouts as needed. If you can say it, you can play it; no rush. As tension makes more tension, I strive to keep everyone relaxed as we progress together.
Curriculum
I’ve written method books/videos for banjo (www.FunkyBanjo.com) and percussion (The Súle System/DrumpathRhythms; the Drummer’s Path) and videos for jug, body percussion, and more. I’m working on an ukulele book.
