About

Hello! My name is Judith, and I’m a classically trained clarinetist with a deep passion for music education. I earned my Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2005, where I studied under top-tier faculty and immersed myself in solo, chamber, and ensemble repertoire. Shortly after graduation, I founded Tempo Music Lessons, a teaching studio and artist collective that I ran for over a decade (2006–2017). Through this venture, I taught clarinet to students of all ages, contracted a team of instructors, and expanded the business into providing live music for weddings and corporate events throughout the Washington, D.C. area.

In addition to teaching, I’ve enjoyed a range of performance experiences — from freelance chamber music to pit orchestra work in local productions of Into the Woods, The Sound of Music, and more. I also served as choir director for St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Landover, Maryland, where I developed a greater appreciation for community music-making and arranging. Whether onstage or in the studio, I bring an encouraging, grounded approach to helping students find their voice — literally and musically — through the clarinet.

Teaching Style

My teaching philosophy centers around building a strong technical foundation while fostering curiosity, creativity, and joy in music-making. I specialize in working with beginners and early intermediate players, and I love seeing students light up when things start to click — whether it’s breath support, embouchure, or finally conquering a tricky rhythm. Lessons with me are warm, structured, and personalized; I’ll always meet you where you are and help you grow step by step. Whether you’re picking up the clarinet for the first time or returning after a break, I’d be honored to guide your musical journey.

Curriculum

I tailor my curriculum to the individual student, but often recommend the Rubank Method series for beginners and beyond, as well as the C. Rose 32 Etudes once students are ready to explore phrasing and expression more deeply. Additional materials, including scales, duets, and solo repertoire, are selected based on student level and interest. I focus on healthy technique, sight-reading, and tone production, and I'm happy to support students working toward school auditions, solo performances, or simply playing for personal enjoyment.
