Alex Cousins
About
Alex Cousins is a world-class cellist, educator, and artistic innovator based in Buffalo, NY, offering private lessons to students around the world. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, Alex blends deep classical training with a modern, expressive approach rooted in tone, movement, and authentic musical connection.
Alex teaches students of all ages and levels — from young players building strong fundamentals to adult beginners returning to music with fresh inspiration. He also specializes in electric and modern cello, helping players explore pedals, looping, tone design, and creative performance techniques.
His teaching style is supportive, intuitive, and highly personalized. Alex focuses on helping each student build confidence, develop a resonant and expressive sound, and cultivate a real relationship with the instrument. Lessons are grounded, encouraging, and designed to meet the student exactly where they are.
Whether you’re discovering the cello for the first time, refining your technique, or pushing into modern styles, Alex will help you grow with clarity, patience, and artistry.
Teaching Style
My teaching style is intuitive, supportive, and centered on helping students develop a beautiful, expressive sound. I focus on tone, phrasing, musical confidence, and the physical ease that allows the cello to feel natural in your hands. Rather than overwhelming students with technical jargon, I teach through clarity, sensation, and connection — helping you feel what great playing feels like.
I meet every student exactly where they are. Some need structure and fundamentals. Others need creativity, improvisation, or a modern approach with looping and pedals. Some need a teacher who encourages their artistry and helps them trust their instincts again. No matter the path, my goal is to build a strong foundation and an honest musical voice you can be proud of.
Lessons move at your pace, are tailored to your goals, and stay grounded in musicality, joy, and real progress.
